Preliminary results of the ongoing investigation of the January events were discussed with UN experts

By the initiative of Kazakhstan, in order to discuss the preliminary results of the investigation of the tragic January events, an online meeting of the leadership of state bodies of the Republic of Kazakhstan with the Special Procedures of the UN Human Rights Council took place, Delovoy Kazakhstan reports.

The meeting in the context of Kazakhstan's compliance with international obligations in the field of human rights protection was held in the format of an interactive dialogue. From the Kazakhstan side there were representatives of the Prosecutor General's Office, Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Justice, Internal Affairs, Information and Public Development, Labor and Social Protection of Population and Healthcare. From the UN - the Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and association Mr. Clement N. Voule, the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism Ms. Fionnuala Ni Aolain and the Chairman of the Working Group on enforced or involuntary disappearances Mr. Luciano A. Hazan participated.

The state bodies of the Republic of Kazakhstan informed independent UN experts about the measures taken by the authorities of our country to stabilize the situation, ensure transparency of the investigation, as well as provide support to persons injured during the unrests.

The UN Special Procedures mandate holders commended Kazakhstan's openness to a broad discussion of the events and their consequences, and asked a number of questions to clarify the conditions of detainees and ensuring impartiality in the ongoing investigation.

In response, the Kazakh representatives explained the provisions of the national legislation on the exercise of detainees' rights, and also informed about the work carried out by state agencies together with the national human rights institutions to ensure the rule of law in conditions of restriction of freedom.

The participants of the meeting expressed their involvement in continuing cooperation in the format of direct dialogue and agreed to consider possible visits of the Special Procedures mandate holders to Kazakhstan.
