At the United Nations headquarters in New York, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Jordan, China, France and South Africa, together with the International Committee of the Red Cross, launched a global initiative to galvanize political commitment to international humanitarian law, DKnews.kz reports.

Launched by six countries from all continents and open to all other states, the initiative aims to boost action to respect, protect and comply with the Geneva Conventions in order to mitigate the impact of armed conflict, reduce civilian suffering and preserve civilian infrastructure.

As part of its implementation, the initiating countries have asked the ICRC to hold consultations involving all stakeholders to develop practical recommendations aimed at renewing commitment to the universal, uniform and faithful application and implementation of the Geneva Conventions, in both letter and spirit.

To summarize and approve the results of the consultations, a Global Summit to Uphold Humanity in War is planned to be held in 2026.

The Geneva Conventions of 1949, ratified by all countries, form the basis of international humanitarian law, establishing rules for the protection of victims of armed conflicts.
