Kazakhstan Completes its Term in the UN Economic and Social Council, DKnews.kz reports.

The Republic of Kazakhstan has concluded its membership in the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) after a successful three-year term in 2022-2024.

ECOSOC is the primary UN body responsible for coordinating the economic and social activities of the United Nations and its specialized agencies. It plays a central role in promoting all three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental.

As a member of the Council, Kazakhstan contributed to global efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It actively participated in discussions and sought solutions to address global challenges such as poverty eradication, improving health and education systems, achieving gender equality, and tackling climate change.

Kazakhstan’s membership facilitated valuable international experience for implementing economic, social, and public administration reforms. Furthermore, Kazakhstan actively pursued President Tokayev’s initiative to establish the UN Regional Center for Sustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan in Almaty.

In 2024, Kazakhstan served in the ECOSOC Bureau as a Vice-President responsible for the Coordination segment. This segment strengthens the Council’s ability to fulfill its mandate by coordinating the activities of its subsidiary bodies within the broader UN system. It serves as a platform for discussions on innovative and sustainable solutions, promoting coordinated action to accelerate the Agenda 2030.

Previously, Kazakhstan was twice elected to ECOSOC for the 2007-2009 and 2014-2016 terms.
