Huawei and Partners Win Four Awards at Global New Calling x AI Challenge Organized by GSMA and GTI

At the GTI Summit held during MWC Shanghai 2025, the winners of the world’s first New Calling x AI Challenge were officially announced. Huawei, in collaboration with industry partners, took home four major awards, demonstrating successful real-world use cases of integrating 5G-A and AI technologies into next-generation calling services. These wins offer practical models for how telecom operators can reimagine voice communication in the AI era, DKnews.kz reports.

A Global Innovation Arena for the Future of Voice

Co-organized by the GSMA Foundry and GTI, the New Calling x AI Challenge marked the first global innovation competition focused on the New Calling ecosystem — a transformative concept that combines voice services with advanced multimedia and artificial intelligence features.

The challenge attracted nearly 100 entries from 58 companies and 16 universities around the world. Proposals spanned both consumer and enterprise use cases, highlighting the telecom industry's growing momentum to unite AI with next-gen communication tools.

The Winners: Huawei and Its Partners Lead the Way

🥇 First Prize:

  • “5G New Calling x AI In-Nanjing” by China Mobile Jiangsu and Huawei
  • “Exploring the New Paradigm of stc Bank's Intelligent Customer Service” by stc and Huawei

PIC3

These projects explored how AI-powered agents and next-gen cloud-network capabilities can reshape customer service, enhance real-time interactions, and transform traditional voice calling into rich, intelligent multimedia engagements.

What Is New Calling?

New Calling redefines mobile voice by integrating real-time translation, visualized voice, avatar calls (Idol Calling), and AI-based interactions into the user experience.

Already commercially deployed across China, Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America, New Calling is helping telecom operators shift from traditional voice revenue models to content-driven, service-centric ecosystems.

Huawei’s Vision: Intelligent Voice Is the Future

At the award ceremony, Ma Peng, President of the CS&IMS Domain at Huawei Cloud Core Network Product Line, shared Huawei’s perspective:

“The convergence of New Calling and AI unlocks powerful new services. The dial pad becomes a portal to AI-powered interactions, personalized communication, and real-time collaboration.”

“True success in New Calling requires a joint commitment across the entire industry. Huawei will continue to innovate together with carriers and partners to redefine voice for the intelligent era.”

Industry-wide Momentum: Collaboration at Scale

To accelerate New Calling development, GSMA, GTI, Huawei, and major global operators established the GSMA Foundry and the 5G New Calling Task Force. These groups have launched white papers, joint demo showcases, and developer platforms to foster ecosystem-wide collaboration and commercialization.

MWC Shanghai 2025: Innovation on Display

MWC Shanghai 2025 is taking place from June 18 to 20 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC). In Hall N1, Huawei is showcasing cutting-edge solutions in 5G-Advanced, AI, cloud infrastructure, and intelligent networks — providing a clear roadmap toward the future of telecom.

New Calling and AI Are Redefining the Voice Experience

Huawei and its global partners are proving that voice can be more than just voice. With AI, cloud integration, and immersive interaction, New Calling is setting the stage for a smarter, richer, more humanized way of communication.

The intelligent future of telecom has already begun — and Huawei is helping to shape it.
