Kazakhstan and Huawei Join Forces for the Digital Transformation of the Energy Sector, DKnews.kz reports.
Digital technologies are entering the energy industry
Kazakhstan and Huawei have signed a landmark agreement that promises to make the sector not only “smarter” but also more reliable, environmentally friendly, and efficient.
At the inaugural Central Asia – China 2025 Regional Energy Forum, a memorandum was signed that may set a new course for the entire energy industry of Kazakhstan. The Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Huawei Technologies Kazakhstan have agreed to jointly drive the digital transformation of the energy sector.
The signed agreement spans multiple industries — from oil and gas to mining and power generation. The two parties plan to deploy artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things, and even create digital twins of industrial assets. And this is more than just a visionary statement.
“The memorandum signed today opens up new opportunities for Kazakhstan to modernize its energy sector. The joint use of advanced technologies will improve the reliability and efficiency of our grids and contribute to the sustainable development of the industry,”
said Yerlan Akkenshenov, Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan.
Next-generation energy: Grid-forming and global expertise
A key focus of the agreement is the implementation of Grid-Forming energy storage systems — innovative technologies designed to stabilize the grid under high demand conditions. Huawei will contribute not just hardware, but its global expertise and proven solutions to support Kazakhstan’s energy ambitions.
Working group to build future-ready infrastructure
The vision doesn’t stop at signatures. A dedicated working group will be established under the Ministry’s Office of Digital Transformation to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the current state of Kazakhstan’s power infrastructure. Their mission is to identify weaknesses and forecast sector needs through 2025–2028 using cutting-edge tools like AI, Big Data, and IoT.
To ensure agility and real-time responsiveness, the parties have agreed on a weekly data-sharing mechanism — allowing continuous updates and immediate reaction to any changes or needs.
A step toward a greener future
But this project is about more than just tech. It reflects a philosophy of progress. As Kazakhstan prioritizes sustainable development, digitalizing the energy sector becomes a key move toward a greener economy, reducing the carbon footprint and boosting overall efficiency.
“Huawei is proud to partner with Kazakhstan and contribute to the modernization of its energy sector. Our expertise in AI, big data, and cloud technology will support the creation of next-generation intelligent grids and accelerate the country’s transition to green and digital energy,”
stated Sun Yaxu, CEO of Huawei Technologies Kazakhstan.
From paperwork to action
Both sides emphasize that this is not just a formality, but a real roadmap for action. Their joint efforts will open the door to adapting the world’s best practices to Kazakhstan’s context, launching innovative projects and positioning the country as a regional leader in energy modernization.
What’s next?
The speed of implementation will determine the success. If these plans become reality, Kazakhstan’s energy sector could soon take on a new form — digital, agile, and secure. And for consumers, that means more reliable power and a lower environmental impact.
