The opening of the XIII season at the Astana Ballet Theatre will take place on 29 and 30 August, featuring the Sultan Baybars ballet, one of the theatre’s most striking historical and dramatic productions. The audience will enjoy an evening filled with beautiful choreography and powerful music, immersed in an atmosphere that transports them back to an era of great achievements. The opening of the season will not only mark the start of a new theatrical year, but also be a real celebration of art. The entire theatre team is preparing for this special event with great care, DKNews.kz reports.

The capital theatre’s repertoire is impressive in its variety and unique approach to art. The performances are well-known and loved by many spectators, so theatre admirers will get the chance to relive the excitement and joy of watching their favourite productions and enjoy the high professionalism of the artists.

Sultan Baybars is one of the most striking performances in the capital’s theatre repertoire. The authors reflect on what it takes to achieve supreme power, the price the character pays for the throne and the desire to keep it. At the heart of the play is the image of the endless steppe and his homesickness. Baybars’ fate is inextricably linked with the Kazakh steppes, where he was born, fell in love with his homeland, and retained its bitter yet fascinating aroma of wormwood in his memory for the rest of his life. The production was created by the following talented artists: composers Khamit Shangaliyev and Alibek Alpiev; poet and Honoured Figure of Kazakhstan Bakhyt Kairbekov, who wrote the libretto; set designer Leonid Basin; costume designer Asya Solovyova; and lighting designer Arseniya Safiullina.

“We are doing our best to get ready for the start of the new season, and the theatre is going strong. Intensive rehearsals are underway, as are introductions of young artists to the Sultan Baybars ballet. The leading soloists Sundet Sultanov and Erkanat Ermagambet will perform the main part of Baybars, which will be the latter’s debut.

We have an extensive tour programme planned for September. From 12 to 14 September, people of Kostanay will be able to enjoy the one-act ballets Carmen Suite and The Arcana of Fate, as well as the national divertissement The Heritage of the Great Steppe. A further significant event on the horizon is a tour to Korea, where the theatre is scheduled to perform a national program staged by Aigul Tati as part of the prestigious Cheonan World Dance Festival 2025.

On 20 September, a special performance will be given by Farkhad Buriyev, who has dedicated 19 years to the ballet stage, 8 of which were spent performing at our theatre. On 27 September, the Symphony Orchestra will present the concert entitled “Names. Double Concerto”.

The autumn repertoire is to be enriched by a special decoration: the premiere of new miniatures in the style of national choreography, created by Aigul Tati. These works are characterised by their vividness and originality, drawing upon the rich traditions and the dynamism of the Great Steppe. They are presented in a contemporary stage interpretation. We are delighted that the new season commences with such extensive and inspiring projects,” stated the theatre’s Artistic Director, Nurlan Kanetov.
