On September 20, 2025, more than 400 participants gathered for a large-scale cleanup event along the Essil Riverbank in Astana, DKNews.kz reports.
The event was organized by the Delegation of the European Union to Kazakhstan in partnership with the Embassy of Estonia in Astana, and supported by the Akimat of Astana, as part of World Cleanup Day and the #EUBeachCleanup campaign, and the national initiative “Taza Qazaqstan”.
In her address to participants, Ms. Aleska Simkic, EU Ambassador to Kazakhstan remarked:
"Today, I am truly inspired by the dedication of all participants who have come together to clean the Essil Riverbank and support a greener Kazakhstan. The #EUBeachCleanup campaign remind us that every action counts — whether reducing plastic, recycling, or simply picking up litter. I am grateful to every person who came to support the action. Together, we can promote environmental responsibility, foster sustainable practices, and contribute to a cleaner and healthier future for Kazakhstan, Europe, and the world"
The event brought together diplomats from embassies across Europe, America, Asia, and Africa, representatives of international organizations, members of the Youth Public Association of the Earth Foundation, Astana residents and guests, all joining forces to clean the banks of the Essil River.
“An idea that started in Estonia has grown into one of the largest civic movements in the world, with nearly 20 million people from almost 200 countries taking part each year. I am pleased that Kazakhstan is part of this global effort. Together, we show that protecting our environment is a responsibility we all share” Mr. Jaap Ora, Ambassador of Estonia to Kazakhstan
The event went beyond cleanup efforts, featuring a textile swap for eco-friendly merchandise in partnership with Likekomek. Participants also shared their progress in the “3 Steps to a Plastic-Free Life” challenge, while educational activities with Global Green Hub engaged and inspired the youngest attendees.
The European Union Delegation and the Estonian Embassy in Kazakhstan extend their deepest gratitude to all partners and participants of World Cleanup Day and the #EUBeachCleanup campaign!
