Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores have been taken to a federal detention facility in Brooklyn after arriving in New York, CBS News reports, citing two informed sources, DKNews.kz reports.

How they were transferred to the United States

According to media reports, the couple arrived at Stewart Airport aboard an FBI aircraft.

Before that:

  • Maduro and Flores were detained at the presidential palace in Caracas
  • they were flown by special forces helicopter to the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima in the Caribbean
  • then transported by plane to New York

In the near future, they are expected to face charges related to so-called “narcoterrorism”.

What Trump said

On Saturday morning, US president Donald Trump confirmed that American forces carried out an operation in Venezuela and took Maduro out of the country.

According to him:

  • the mission was successful
  • the operation followed a pre-planned scenario

The Pentagon has not disclosed further details.

Venezuela’s response

Venezuelan foreign minister Yván Gil said Caracas would seek an emergency UN Security Council meeting.

The authorities insist that:

  • the country’s sovereignty was violated
  • US actions must be assessed at the international level

Officials in Caracas describe the incident as “aggression”.

A court process in the United States is expected.
