Kazakhstan has taken part in preparatory consultations ahead of a planned visit by the OIC Ministerial Contact Group on Afghanistan to Kabul. Ruslan Kospanov, Consul General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Jeddah and Deputy Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), participated in a technical-level preparatory meeting held as part of the process, DKNews.kz reports.

The meeting marked an important stage in organizing the upcoming visit and coordinating joint efforts among OIC member states. Participants focused on organizational and technical matters, as well as on aligning the agenda for the Contact Group’s visit to the Afghan capital.

Coordinated approach seen as key to effective engagement

During the discussions, diplomats exchanged views on the key elements of the forthcoming visit. Particular emphasis was placed on the need for a coordinated and unified approach among OIC member states when engaging with Afghanistan, in order to ensure the effectiveness and practical outcomes of the mission.

Participants also stressed that the agenda should reflect a balanced consideration of political, humanitarian and economic issues, which remain central to the international community’s engagement with Afghanistan.

Background on the OIC Contact Group on Afghanistan

The OIC Ministerial Contact Group on Afghanistan was established in accordance with Article 33 of Resolution No. 61/51-POL “On the Situation in Afghanistan.” The resolution was adopted at the 51st Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of OIC Member States, held on June 21–22, 2025, in Istanbul.

The Contact Group was created to coordinate efforts, promote cooperation and ensure consistency in the actions of OIC member states on Afghanistan-related issues. Its mandate covers political dialogue, humanitarian assistance and economic engagement.

Kazakhstan’s role in the Contact Group

Kazakhstan is an active member of the OIC Contact Group on Afghanistan. On September 23, 2025, on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Kazakhstan participated in a meeting of the Contact Group, reaffirming its commitment to multilateral diplomacy and coordinated international efforts on the Afghan track.

The Contact Group includes Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Pakistan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Gambia, Uzbekistan, Iran, Egypt and Azerbaijan.

Afghanistan remains high on the international agenda

Preparations for the visit to Kabul reflect the OIC’s intention to pursue a structured and coordinated dialogue with Afghanistan. For Kazakhstan, participation in this process is part of a broader foreign policy approach focused on regional stability, constructive engagement and support for international diplomatic initiatives.

The upcoming visit is expected to help clarify priorities for engagement with Afghanistan and strengthen coordination among OIC member states in addressing ongoing political, humanitarian and economic challenges.
