Kazakhstan and Mongolia Aim to Boost Trade Turnover to $500 Million

Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Minister of National Economy Serik Zhumangarin held a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister of Mongolia Khassuuryn Gankhuyag, during which the two sides discussed the current state and future prospects of bilateral cooperation, DKNews.kz reports.

At the start of the meeting, Serik Zhumangarin congratulated his counterpart on his appointment to the high state position and wished him success in his new role. He подчеркнул that Mongolia is an important partner of Kazakhstan in the Asian region, noting that bilateral relations continue to develop steadily in the spirit of mutual respect and trust rooted in deep historical ties.

Trade as the Foundation of Strategic Partnership

The central focus of the talks was trade and economic cooperation, which both sides view as the cornerstone of Kazakh-Mongolian partnership. The Heads of State have set an ambitious goal to increase bilateral trade turnover to $500 million in the medium term.

The parties expressed confidence that this target can be achieved through:

  • expanding the range of goods exchanged,
  • developing cooperative and joint projects,
  • gradually eliminating trade and administrative barriers.

Current Trade Figures Show Growth

According to the results for January–November 2025, trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Mongolia reached $121.5 million, marking a 5.5% increase year-on-year.

  • Kazakhstan’s exports amounted to $113 million,
  • imports from Mongolia totaled $8.6 million.

Kazakhstan’s exports mainly consist of tobacco products, rapeseed, bread and flour products, confectionery and other food items, oilseeds, as well as engines and machinery products. Imports from Mongolia include meat and meat products, cashmere, footwear, carpets, and wool-based goods.

Trade Mission and New Business Opportunities

To further expand trade, Kazakhstan plans to send a trade mission to Mongolia. The mission will focus on establishing direct business contacts and presenting Kazakhstan’s industrial zones, special economic zones, and overall export potential.

Agriculture as a Key Growth Area

The meeting also highlighted the strong potential for cooperation in the agricultural sector. The sides discussed opportunities to increase exports of Kazakh agricultural products, as well as prospects for supplying veterinary vaccines, including the possibility of localizing vaccine production in Mongolia.

Mongolia’s Position

Khassuuryn Gankhuyag emphasized Kazakhstan’s strategic importance for Mongolia as a regional partner. He expressed confidence that bilateral cooperation would intensify in the current year and highlighted Kazakhstan’s role as a bridge between Mongolia and Central Asian countries.

The Mongolian side also expressed interest in establishing a joint working group to identify and remove non-tariff barriers, as well as in deepening cooperation in the areas of standardization, veterinary protection, and livestock farming.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further developing constructive, pragmatic, and mutually beneficial cooperation, aimed at delivering concrete economic results for both countries.
