Travel between Kazakhstan and China is set to become even more convenient. Air Astana has announced the start of ticket sales for a new regular route connecting Almaty and Shanghai. The airline plans to operate the first flights from 29 March 2026, subject to obtaining the necessary approvals from government authorities, DKNews.kz reports.
The new route marks another important step in strengthening air connectivity between Kazakhstan and China. Shanghai is one of Asia’s largest мегаполises and a global centre for finance, business and innovation. With the launch of direct flights, the city will become significantly more accessible for both business travellers and tourists from Kazakhstan.
Convenient schedule and modern aircraft
Flights from Almaty to Shanghai will be operated three times a week - on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Departure from Almaty is scheduled for 19:10, with arrival in Shanghai at 04:25 the following day.
Return flights will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The aircraft will depart Shanghai at 05:40 and arrive in Almaty at 10:15.
All flights will be operated using the modern and comfortable Airbus A321LR aircraft. Designed for longer routes, this narrow-body aircraft offers enhanced passenger comfort. Flight time will be 6 hours and 15 minutes from Almaty to Shanghai, and 7 hours and 35 minutes on the return leg.
Ticket prices
The minimum round-trip fare from Almaty to Shanghai, including all taxes and fees, starts from 281,312 tenge in economy class. Business class fares start from 921,132 tenge.
Tickets are available for purchase on the official Air Astana website, via the airline’s mobile application, as well as through accredited travel agencies.
Expanding Air Astana’s presence in China
The launch of the Shanghai route further expands Air Astana’s network in China. The airline already operates regular flights to Beijing, Guangzhou, Urumqi and Sanya. Adding Shanghai to this list strengthens Air Astana’s position in one of the most important and fast-growing aviation markets in the world.
The new service creates additional opportunities for business travel, tourism, education and personal trips between Kazakhstan and China. An added advantage for passengers is the visa-free entry regime for Kazakh citizens travelling to China, which makes planning a trip even easier.
Why Shanghai matters
Shanghai is often described as the financial and business capital of China. The city is known for its striking skyline, rich history and cultural diversity. Among its most famous landmarks are the Bund waterfront with panoramic views of the Pudong financial district, the Oriental Pearl Tower, and the classical Yuyuan Garden.
In addition, Shanghai offers a wide range of museums, theatres, temples and shopping districts. The city is also renowned for its gastronomy and its unique blend of traditional Chinese culture with the fast-paced rhythm of a global мегаполис. This combination makes Shanghai attractive not only for business travellers, but also for tourists seeking new impressions.
The launch of direct flights between Almaty and Shanghai brings one of Asia’s key cities closer to Kazakhstan. Industry observers believe the new route has strong potential to become one of Air Astana’s most popular international destinations.
