For many Kazakhstani students, working on large-scale international energy projects used to feel like a distant ambition rather than a realistic career path. Today, that is changing. Starting this year, students of Nazarbayev University will be able to undertake internships at the Kazakhstan-based facilities of the Italian engineering and energy group MAIRE, with the possibility of future full-time employment, DKNews.kz reports.

This is not a symbolic or short-term placement. Students will be involved in real industrial projects linked to the energy transition, gas chemistry and the development of sustainable technologies - areas that are shaping the future of the global energy sector.

A new bridge between academia and industry

The opportunity is based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed on February 2 between Nazarbayev University and MAIRE. The document marks the beginning of a long-term partnership focused on training a new generation of engineers, researchers and technology specialists.

Under the agreement, students will gain hands-on experience at MAIRE’s projects in Kazakhstan, while top graduates will have the chance to continue their careers within an international professional environment.

More than internships

The cooperation goes well beyond student placements. Experts from MAIRE will deliver lectures to Nazarbayev University students in both in-person and online formats, sharing practical knowledge gained from international engineering and energy projects.

The partnership also предусматривает:

  • sponsorship support for outstanding students and faculty members
  • research grants
  • joint seminars, conferences and educational events
  • applied research initiatives and the development of student-focused innovative projects

In essence, the agreement creates a working ecosystem where academic knowledge is directly connected to real industrial practice.

Why this matters for Kazakhstan

The partnership comes at a time when MAIRE is actively implementing strategic industrial initiatives across Kazakhstan. Alongside technology and infrastructure, the company is placing a strong emphasis on human capital development.

For Kazakhstan, this cooperation represents a practical step toward building a highly skilled and competitive national workforce. Specialists capable of working on complex engineering and energy projects are becoming a key factor in long-term economic growth. Partnerships of this kind help bring the country closer to global technological and industrial trends.

What the partners say

According to Nazarbayev University President Professor Waqar Ahmad, the university consistently focuses on cooperation with leading industry players:

“Our university trains highly qualified, motivated and talented graduates whose skills are internationally recognized. We work closely with leading companies and value their commitment to long-term partnerships. Strengthening links between our graduates and industry, and creating opportunities for the practical application of knowledge, remains one of our key missions. We are confident that this partnership will be mutually beneficial.”

MAIRE representatives also stress the strategic importance of the agreement. Regional Vice President Niccolò Heilpern noted that engagement with the academic community supports the development of knowledge, innovation and professional opportunities in Kazakhstan, while helping to create the conditions for training the next generation of engineers and innovators.

About MAIRE

MAIRE S.p.A. is an international technology and engineering group focused on advancing the global energy transition. The company delivers integrated engineering and construction solutions for downstream markets and develops sustainable technologies across three key areas - nitrogen-based sustainable fertilizers and fuels, low-carbon energy solutions and circular technologies.

Founded in Italy at the end of the 19th century, MAIRE today operates in more than 50 countries. Its shares are listed on the Milan Stock Exchange. In Kazakhstan, companies within the MAIRE group are involved in a number of major gas-chemical projects, including initiatives implemented in partnership with national companies.

An investment in the future

This memorandum is more than a formal agreement. It is a long-term investment in young professionals, giving Kazakhstani students access to international expertise and real industrial experience, while strengthening the country’s talent base.

By deepening cooperation between universities and industry, such partnerships help transform higher education into a driver of innovation and position Kazakhstan as an attractive destination for technology, expertise and future growth.
