President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a meeting at the Akorda with Moutaz Al-Khayyat, Chairman of the Board of Power International Holding, and Ramez Al-Khayyat, the company’s Vice-Chairman and President, DKNews.kz reports.

The talks focused on expanding investment cooperation between Kazakhstan and Qatar, particularly in strategic sectors of the economy.

Focus on energy partnership

During the meeting, Tokayev highlighted the importance of large-scale gas projects as a key foundation of bilateral economic ties.

He noted that cooperation in this area plays a critical role in strengthening Kazakhstan’s energy security.

Key areas discussed included:

  • gas processing projects
  • transportation infrastructure
  • energy generation initiatives
  • long-term investment cooperation

The President emphasized that such projects contribute not only to economic growth but also to the stability of the national energy system.

Expansion into the telecommunications sector

The leadership of Power International Holding briefed the President on plans to expand the company’s presence in Kazakhstan’s telecommunications market.

This includes participation in the acquisition of Mobile Telecom Service, which operates under the Tele2 brand.

According to Tokayev, the company’s involvement is expected to support:

  • modernization of telecommunications infrastructure

  • improvement in service quality

  • wider access to digital services for citizens

Officials noted that the telecom sector is becoming increasingly important as Kazakhstan accelerates digital transformation and connectivity development.

Strategic significance of Qatari investment

Experts say Qatari investment plays a growing role in Kazakhstan’s diversification strategy, especially in infrastructure, energy, and high-tech sectors.

Such cooperation helps:

  • attract long-term foreign capital
  • support large infrastructure projects
  • strengthen energy independence
  • expand technological modernization

Analysts also point out that closer economic ties with Gulf partners reflect Kazakhstan’s broader strategy of diversifying investment sources.

Commitment to further cooperation

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their readiness to deepen partnership and implement new joint projects.

The dialogue highlighted strong momentum in Kazakh–Qatari economic relations and the shared interest in expanding cooperation across strategic sectors.
