The date of Kazakhstan’s next presidential election has been clarified. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said the vote will take place in 2029, strictly in accordance with the deadlines set by the current Constitution, DKNews.kz reports.

The statement was made after the head of state cast his ballot in the national referendum on the draft of Kazakhstan’s new Constitution, held on March 15, 2026.

The next presidential election will be held, as required, within the timeframes established by the current Constitution, in 2029,” Tokayev told journalists.

The remark came amid ongoing discussions about major political changes linked to constitutional reforms. In recent years, Kazakhstan has been going through a period of institutional transformation, with authorities promoting the modernization of the political system, strengthening the role of parliament, and updating the social contract between the state and society.

Why this matters

The president’s statement effectively puts an end to speculation about possible early presidential elections that had occasionally been discussed in political and expert circles. By confirming the timeline, Tokayev signaled that the political cycle will continue under the framework of the existing constitutional norms.

Under Kazakhstan’s Constitution, following recent reforms, the president is elected for a single seven-year term without the right to re-election. This rule was introduced as part of broader political changes aimed at renewing the country’s political system.

As a result, the current presidential term is expected to last until 2029.

Referendum on the new Constitution

Earlier, the president signed a decree calling for a national referendum on March 15, 2026, inviting citizens to express their position on the draft of a new Constitution.

According to the authorities, the proposed amendments are designed to further develop political institutions, improve the system of governance, and strengthen the principles of a fair state.

Voting is taking place across the country, and its outcome may become one of the most significant political developments in Kazakhstan in the coming years.

Political cycle until 2029

Thus, the coming years for Kazakhstan are expected to focus less on election campaigns and more on implementing institutional reforms and economic programs.

Political analysts say that a stable electoral schedule allows the government to concentrate on strategic priorities - from economic modernization to digital development and social policy.

According to the president, the next major milestone in the country’s political life will come in 2029, when Kazakhstan’s citizens will once again elect their head of state.
