Kazakhstan Strengthens Cooperation with UNESCO and ICESCO

The annual meeting of the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO and ICESCO was held under the chairmanship of State Counselor Erlan Karin, DKNews.kz reports.

The meeting focused on Kazakhstan’s international cultural and humanitarian initiatives, cooperation with UNESCO and ICESCO, and the promotion of the country’s interests on the global stage.

Kazakhstan’s partnership reaches a new level

Opening the meeting, Erlan Karin highlighted the growing importance of Kazakhstan’s engagement with both international organizations.

«Driven by the attention and support of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kazakhstan's cooperation with these international organizations has advanced to a new level.»

The participants reviewed ongoing projects and discussed priorities for the National Commission’s future activities.

Active role within UNESCO highlighted

Deputy Chairman of the National Commission Erzhan Ashikbayev reported on the implementation of foreign policy initiatives aimed at strengthening Kazakhstan’s international standing.

He emphasized Kazakhstan’s active participation within UNESCO, supported by:

  • membership in the World Heritage Committee
  • membership in the Council of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme
  • chairmanship of the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs

Ashikbayev also informed participants about the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ efforts to promote Kazakhstan’s candidacy for membership in the UNESCO Executive Board for the 2027–2031 term.

New nominations and cultural initiatives discussed

Participants reviewed priority areas for future work, including initiatives linked to Kazakhstan’s constitutional reforms and the preparation of new nominations for UNESCO lists.

The meeting also highlighted the strengthening of cooperation with ICESCO.

Particular attention was paid to plans for the city of Turkestan to receive the title of Cultural Capital of the Islamic World in 2027, a designation expected to further enhance the city’s international cultural profile.

Focus on coordination and international visibility

In concluding the meeting, members of the National Commission stressed the importance of closer coordination between government institutions and civil society organizations.

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to promoting Kazakhstan’s interests within UNESCO and ICESCO and expanding the country’s contribution to international cultural, educational and scientific cooperation.
