President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev traveled to Doha on Sunday for a visit that carried both deep personal symbolism and diplomatic significance, DKNews.kz reports.

While the primary purpose of the trip was to express condolences following the passing of Qatar’s Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the meeting with Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani also highlighted the enduring partnership between Kazakhstan and Qatar and touched on key regional developments.

The visit underscored how relations between Astana and Doha have evolved over decades — from the first years of Kazakhstan’s independence to today's strategic dialogue on regional security and economic cooperation.

Tokayev pays tribute to a key architect of modern Qatar

Upon arriving in Doha, President Tokayev personally conveyed his condolences to the Amir of Qatar and members of the Royal Family.

Speaking about the late Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Kazakh President described him as one of the defining leaders behind Qatar’s remarkable transformation into a globally influential state.

“Many historic and landmark achievements of modern Qatar, both domestically and on the global stage, will forever be inextricably linked with his name. Sheikh Hamad was a global statesman and a true friend of the Kazakh nation,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.

His remarks reflected not only respect for Sheikh Hamad's leadership but also recognition of the personal role he played in strengthening ties with Kazakhstan.

A relationship built over decades

Tokayev recalled that Sheikh Hamad stood at the origins of Kazakh-Qatari relations and personally invested in developing bilateral cooperation.

The President noted that the Father Amir visited Kazakhstan twice on official visits. During the first visit in 1999, Tokayev himself welcomed Sheikh Hamad while serving as Kazakhstan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The Kazakh leader also highlighted one of Astana's most recognizable landmarks — the Al-Farabi Mosque — which was built on Sheikh Hamad’s initiative.

Beyond symbolic projects, Tokayev expressed gratitude for Qatar’s support during Kazakhstan’s formative years, when the Gulf nation contributed to several social and infrastructure initiatives that helped the young state develop after independence.

“We stand in unshakeable solidarity with you during this hour of national mourning. May Allah bestow His mercy upon him and grant him Jannah,” the President said.

More than condolences: regional issues on the agenda

Although the visit was centered on mourning, the meeting also became an opportunity for substantive diplomatic dialogue.

At the initiative of the Qatari side, President Tokayev and Amir Sheikh Tamim exchanged views on the current international situation, with particular attention to developments in the Middle East.

The discussion reflected the growing importance of Kazakhstan and Qatar as active participants in international diplomacy at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.

Qatar's Amir accepts invitation to Kazakhstan

The meeting concluded with a forward-looking message.

President Tokayev reaffirmed his invitation to Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to pay an official visit to Kazakhstan at a mutually convenient time.

The Qatari leader gratefully accepted the invitation, signaling both countries' intention to continue expanding political dialogue and strengthening their long-standing partnership.

As Kazakhstan and Qatar deepen cooperation across diplomacy, investment and regional affairs, the Doha meeting demonstrated that even during a period of mourning, bilateral relations remain focused on the future while honoring a shared history.
