Chinese calligraphy, regarded as one of the oldest and most respected traditional arts in the world, is drawing growing interest among young people and cultural enthusiasts in Kazakhstan.

A recent visit to the Confucius Institute in Almaty offered a closer look at this centuries-old art form, where every brushstroke reflects discipline, balance and concentration. During the experience, a Kazakh media professional tried writing Chinese characters under the guidance of instructors, discovering that mastering calligraphy requires far more than artistic talent.

Unlike ordinary handwriting, Chinese calligraphy emphasizes patience, precise brush control and harmony between movement and emotion. Each stroke follows strict rules developed over thousands of years, making the practice both an artistic and philosophical discipline.

Teachers at the Confucius Institute explained that learning calligraphy helps students gain a deeper understanding of Chinese language, history and traditional culture. Beyond improving writing skills, the practice cultivates focus, perseverance and appreciation for one of China’s most treasured forms of intangible cultural heritage.

Interest in Chinese language and culture continues to expand across Kazakhstan, with the Confucius Institute serving as an important platform for educational and cultural exchanges between the two neighboring countries. Activities such as calligraphy workshops allow students and visitors to experience Chinese traditions firsthand while strengthening mutual understanding.

The growing popularity of cultural programs reflects the broader people-to-people exchanges promoted under the Belt and Road Initiative, bringing the peoples of Kazakhstan and China closer through education, language and shared cultural experiences.
