500 Young AI Talents from 103 Countries Gather in Astana

Global AI has arrived in Astana. From August 2 to 8, Kazakhstan’s capital is hosting the 2026 International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence, or IOAI, DKNews.kz reports.

More than 120 teams representing 103 countries and territories have officially registered. Organizers expect nearly 500 young AI specialists, mentors and delegation leaders.

For Kazakhstan, this is more than a major educational event. The country is welcoming a generation that could soon be building new language models, computer vision systems, robots and data analysis technologies.

What is the IOAI?

The International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence is one of the world’s youngest international science competitions. The inaugural event took place in Burgas, Bulgaria, in 2024, followed by Beijing in 2025.

Astana is hosting the third edition. In just two years, the IOAI has grown from a new student competition into a global event involving 103 countries and territories.

Each country may enter up to two teams of four students. Contestants reach the world stage after passing multi-round national selections and intensive training camps.

The Competitive Programming Federation of Kazakhstan, or CPFED, is the principal host of IOAI 2026. The main events will take place at the Kazakh National University of Sports and the Alem.ai center.

Knowing How to Use ChatGPT Is Not Enough

The IOAI does not test how well students can write prompts for a chatbot. Competitors need a strong command of mathematics, programming, machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing.

They must understand how an algorithm works, choose the right method, write code and interpret the output. There will be no ready-made answers waiting in a textbook.

The competition consists of an at-home introductory stage and two individual rounds in Astana. The first round builds on tasks released in advance, while the second introduces entirely new challenges.

The Scientific Committee selected three main problems for each on-site round. Solving them requires more than applying off-the-shelf tools: students must understand the model, work with data and think creatively.

A separate Team Challenge is also part of the program. Its final stage will take place at Alem.ai, where the ten strongest teams will refine and defend their solutions.

Why Astana’s Selection Matters

The International Organizing Committee considered safety, transport accessibility, the preparedness of the local team, government support and the ability to keep the approved dates when selecting the host city.

Astana is hosting the competition as countries intensify their race for young AI talent. A student with a strong foundation in mathematics and engineering is becoming as strategically valuable as a researcher or technology entrepreneur.

For Kazakhstan, the IOAI creates two opportunities at once. The country can showcase its digital infrastructure while giving local students the chance to compete against the world’s best without travelling abroad.

A week of joint work will connect contestants, coaches, universities and technology companies. These relationships can later develop into research teams, educational programs and startups.

Kazakhstan Enters Its Home Olympiad from a Position of Strength

Kazakhstan’s national team is already among the IOAI’s strongest performers. At the 2025 Olympiad in Beijing, Kazakh students won seven medals, including three golds.

Abu Kanabek, Sultanbi Issatay and Zhanibek Kassymkan secured gold medals in the individual competition. All three finished among the top 24 contestants at the world final.

Kazakhstan’s 2026 national team was selected through several stages. After an online round, 40 of the strongest students from across the country were invited to Astana for two days of complex practical challenges.

“We selected the country’s strongest students and held the final stage in Astana. The result will be a national team that will compete at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence. Today, competitions like this, with their selection and training systems, have evolved into a sport of their own. These are the young people who will shape the development of technology not only in Kazakhstan, but around the world,” said Danabek Kaliazhdarov, Secretary General of the Competitive Programming Federation of Kazakhstan.

Competing at home will bring the national team additional attention, but it will not make the contest any easier. Astana is welcoming national selection winners from countries with some of the world’s strongest mathematics and programming schools.

Who Is Supporting IOAI 2026?

The Olympiad’s global partners include Google, IMC, Jane Street and Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence. Huawei is supporting the event as a Local Platinum sponsor.

The interest from technology companies is easy to understand: competition for AI talent begins long before a first employment contract. International Olympiads allow companies and universities to identify outstanding students before they enter higher education.

For the contestants, however, the real prize extends beyond a medal. They gain access to an international community where ideas are judged by the quality of the code and model rather than the author’s age or country.

What Will Happen in Astana?

The IOAI program combines individual rounds, team challenges, problem reviews, appeals and lectures. A separate day will be dedicated to educational, cultural and sporting activities.

The Team Challenge final and awards ceremony will take place on August 7. International delegations will leave Astana the following day.

The medals will show the balance of strength at a single Olympiad. The bigger result will emerge later, when today’s students begin creating technologies that universities, governments and the world’s largest companies will compete to secure.
