Abai’s Monument Has Stood in Budapest Since 2014

The bust of Abai Kunanbaiuly was unveiled in the Hungarian capital on June 3, 2014.

It is located on Astana Street in Városliget Park. Abai Day commemorative events are held here with the participation of diplomats and Kazakhstanis living and studying in Hungary.

Students and Diaspora Representatives Joined the Ceremony

The flower-laying ceremony brought together staff of the Embassy of Kazakhstan, Kazakh students, and members of the diaspora.

The commemorative date therefore united Kazakhstan’s diplomatic mission and the Kazakh community in Hungary at one symbolic location.

For the participants, the central focus of the day was Abai’s legacy and the continuation of the annual tradition at his monument.

The location carries an additional symbolic detail: the monument to one of the greatest figures of Kazakh literature stands on a street named after Kazakhstan’s capital.

Two symbols connected with Kazakhstan therefore meet at one point in Budapest — Astana Street and the bust of Abai.

More than a decade after its unveiling, the monument remains a regular gathering place for Kazakhstanis on Abai Day.
