11 Kazakh Peacekeepers Arrive in Lebanon as UNIFIL Mandate Nears End

Kazakhstan has returned to the mission in Lebanon. Eleven servicemen of the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan have arrived to serve with the Indian battalion of UNIFIL at a time when the UN peacekeeping mission is approaching the end of its current mandate, DKNews.kz reports.

The service of the Kazakh peacekeepers was discussed during a meeting between Rassul Jumaly, Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Lebanon, and Colonel Prasun Singh, Commander of the Indian peacekeeping battalion within UNIFIL. Kazakhstan resumed the participation of its peacekeepers in the Indian contingent in July 2026.

Kazakhstan Sent 11 New Peacekeepers to Lebanon

The Indian side briefed the Kazakh diplomat on the service of the Kazakh military personnel.

Prasun Singh described the Kazakh peacekeepers as highly trained servicemen. The Indian battalion also assisted in receiving and accommodating the 11 newly arrived military personnel from Kazakhstan.

For Kazakhstan, this marks the resumption of practical peacekeeping cooperation with India within a UN mission.

UNIFIL’s Current Mandate Ends in 2026

The future of the mission amid the continuing conflict in the region was discussed separately.

UNIFIL’s current mandate runs until the end of 2026. The sides reviewed possible scenarios after that period, including the potential reconfiguration of the mission.

This directly concerns the Kazakh contingent, which is beginning its service at a time when the future format of the international presence in Lebanon is under discussion.

Kazakh Servicemen Deploy Amid Regional Tensions

The sides also reviewed the current situation in the region in connection with UNIFIL’s role.

The Kazakh peacekeepers are joining the mission while its existing responsibilities remain in place, but the next stage of the international peacekeeping presence is still being considered.

Kazakhstan and India Seek to Continue Peacekeeping Cooperation

Rassul Jumaly thanked the Indian side for its assistance in organizing the reception of the Kazakh contingent and expressed hope for continued successful cooperation between the two countries in peacekeeping.

The meeting was also attended by Colonel Arman Dyussekeyev, Military Attaché of the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Lebanon, as well as UNIFIL representatives.

For the 11 newly arrived Kazakh servicemen, the mission begins at a particularly important moment: UNIFIL’s current mandate expires at the end of 2026, while its future format is still under discussion.
