Kazakhstan is deepening its investment dialogue with Hong Kong. The talks focused on new joint projects, attracting major Chinese companies to Kazakhstan, and building direct links between business communities on both sides, DKNews.kz reports.

On August 19, 2026, in Beijing, Shakhrat Nuryshev, Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the People’s Republic of China, met with Jonathan Choi, Chairman of Sunwah Group, Chairman of the Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, and Chairman of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area Entrepreneurs Alliance.

Kazakhstan Is Looking for Projects in Priority Sectors

One of the central topics of the meeting was the expansion of investment cooperation between Kazakhstan and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The sides discussed opportunities for implementing joint projects in priority sectors of Kazakhstan’s economy. The statement did not specify particular projects, potential investment volumes, or implementation timelines.

Special attention was also given to attracting major Chinese companies to investment projects in Kazakhstan.

This broadens the scope of the talks beyond the potential participation of Sunwah Group itself. The focus is also on creating stronger direct ties with a wider circle of Chinese business leaders and investors.

Greater Bay Area Business Networks Enter the Dialogue

The status of Kazakhstan’s counterpart adds a wider business dimension to the meeting.

In addition to leading Sunwah Group, Jonathan Choi also chairs the Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area Entrepreneurs Alliance.

The sides discussed strengthening direct contacts between the business communities of Kazakhstan and China, as well as holding joint events to promote investment cooperation.

The practical goal is to move beyond individual high-level meetings and create more direct channels between potential investors and projects in Kazakhstan.

Sunwah Group Operates Across Multiple Sectors

Sunwah Group is a privately owned diversified conglomerate headquartered in Hong Kong and founded in 1957.

Its activities cover food, real estate, financial services, technology, infrastructure, media, education, green technologies and healthcare.

The group operates across mainland China, Japan, Southeast Asia, Canada, the United States, Europe and Australia.

That broad sectoral profile matches the nature of the current discussions: Kazakhstan is not focusing on one narrow project, but on possible cooperation across several priority areas of the economy.

Dialogue with Sunwah Group Continues in 2026

The latest meeting continues Kazakhstan’s contacts with the leadership of the Hong Kong-based conglomerate.

In February, we reported on Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s meeting with Jonathan Choi, where investment opportunities in finance, energy, digitalization, healthcare, agriculture and construction were discussed.

The Beijing talks have now shifted the focus toward the next stage: direct business-to-business contacts, attracting major companies, and promoting specific investment initiatives.

Following the meeting, the sides expressed interest in continuing practical work on mutually beneficial initiatives and creating additional opportunities for trade, economic and investment cooperation.

One key question remains open: which projects will become the first concrete results of the renewed Kazakhstan–Hong Kong investment dialogue has not yet been disclosed.
