The US President expressed appreciation for their trust-based relationship and said he was looking forward to welcoming Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Miami for the G20 Summit, DKNews.kz reports.
The message was delivered on August 25 during the Kazakh President’s meeting with a delegation from the US House of Representatives. The delegation included House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith and members of Congress Greg Murphy, Carol Miller, Ronny Jackson, Wesley Bell and Ed Case.
Trump Called Jason Smith at 2 a.m. Before the Meeting
One of the most notable details of the meeting was Jason Smith’s account of a phone call he received from Donald Trump just hours before meeting Tokayev.
“President Donald Trump called me at two o’clock this morning. I told him that I would be meeting with you in a few hours. He asked me to convey his warmest wishes to you and expressed his appreciation for the trusting and constructive relationship that has developed between the two of you. He also said that he is looking forward to your visit to Miami to attend the G20 Summit. One of the main purposes of our visit is to explore opportunities to further expand economic ties between the United States and your beautiful country. We are firmly committed to a substantive dialogue aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. Our President considers this extremely important,” Jason Smith said.
The US delegation also made the economic focus of its visit clear: exploring opportunities to deepen ties between Kazakhstan and the United States.
Tokayev Says Kazakhstan-US Relations Have Reached an Unprecedented Level
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev highlighted the strong momentum in the multifaceted partnership between Kazakhstan and the United States.
He pointed to trade, economic and investment cooperation, as well as advanced technologies, science, education and culture, as key areas of bilateral engagement.
Tokayev said that constructive and trust-based dialogue with Donald Trump had brought relations between the two countries to an unprecedented level.
The meeting also addressed cooperation in multilateral formats. Kazakhstan’s support for US initiatives aimed at promoting global and regional stability, including the Board of Peace and the Abraham Accords, was highlighted.
The two countries’ role in strengthening nuclear security and the non-proliferation regime was also discussed.
New Kurultai to Make Parliamentary Diplomacy a Priority
The visit by US lawmakers came shortly after elections to Kazakhstan’s unicameral Kurultai.
Tokayev described the timing of the delegation’s visit as symbolic and called the parliamentary elections a historic event marking a new stage in Kazakhstan’s political modernization.
According to the President, the unicameral Kurultai is intended to make the legislative process more efficient and improve the quality of lawmaking.
Parliamentary diplomacy is expected to become an important area of work for the new legislature.
“A constructive and substantive dialogue between members of the US Congress and the Kurultai is important for further deepening mutual understanding, advancing shared priorities and strengthening the Kazakhstan-US partnership,” Tokayev said.
US Lawmakers Briefed on Kazakhstan’s Reforms
Tokayev briefed the congressional delegation on the large-scale political and socioeconomic reforms underway in Kazakhstan.
He also outlined the main priorities for modernizing the country’s governance system as part of its strategic course toward building a fair and progressive state.
The President presented key aspects of Kazakhstan’s new Constitution to the US lawmakers, emphasizing its nationwide support.
The talks ultimately highlighted two areas for further engagement: stronger parliamentary ties between the US Congress and Kazakhstan’s new Kurultai, and deeper economic cooperation.
Tokayev expressed confidence that his upcoming visit to Miami would provide fresh momentum to the enhanced strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and the United States.
