The Korean National Ballet brought its own interpretation of the classical ballet Le Corsaire to Astana, adding a new chapter to cultural cooperation between Kazakhstan and the Republic of Korea, DKNews.kz reports.
The performances took place on August 28 and 29 at the Astana Ballet Theatre. The tour was organized jointly by the Korean Cultural Center of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Kazakhstan, the Korean National Ballet and Astana Ballet.
Le Corsaire Was Condensed from Three Acts to Two
The Korean National Ballet did not bring a literal reproduction of Marius Petipa’s classical production to Astana.
Soloist and choreographer Song Jeong-bin adapted the original three-act version into a two-act performance, giving the production a faster and more dynamic pace while preserving its classical ballet foundation.
The choreography combines traditional ballet techniques with a contemporary artistic interpretation. For audiences in Kazakhstan, the performances offered a chance to see a familiar work through the distinctive style of the Korean ballet school.
Both evenings ended with prolonged applause from packed audiences.
Astana Strengthens Its Role as a Stage for International Ballet
The two performances of Le Corsaire went beyond a conventional touring engagement. The organizers view the project as part of broader professional exchange between cultural institutions in Kazakhstan and the Republic of Korea.
Both countries have established ballet traditions and developed infrastructure for the performing arts. Direct cooperation between the Korean National Ballet and Astana Ballet helps expand professional ties and creates a foundation for future joint cultural initiatives.
Ku Bong-chul, Director of the Korean Cultural Center of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, emphasized the role of the tour as a platform for creative exchange.
“This performance became an important platform where artists and performing arts institutions from the two countries were able to share their creative potential,” Ku Bong-chul said.
Kazakh Audiences Saw the Distinctive Style of Korean Ballet
The Astana performances were not built around the name Le Corsaire alone.
The Korean National Ballet demonstrated a high level of performance, strong ensemble coordination and the characteristics of its national ballet school. Its contemporary interpretation of a classical work became one of the defining features of the tour.
For Astana Ballet, hosting an international company continues its broader focus on international cooperation. The theatre serves as a venue for introducing Kazakh audiences to foreign ballet and theatre companies while strengthening professional and creative ties with cultural institutions around the world.
Astana Ballet Expands International Cultural Cooperation
Tair Karatayev, Director of Astana Ballet Theatre, described the Korean National Ballet’s visit as a significant event for cultural relations between the two countries.
“Astana Ballet is always open to international creative cooperation and the implementation of joint cultural projects. We strive to introduce Kazakh audiences to the finest examples of world choreographic art. In this context, the performance of the Korean National Ballet became a significant event in the cultural life of our Republic and another important step toward strengthening cultural ties between Kazakhstan and the Republic of Korea,” Karatayev said.
The Le Corsaire tour continued Astana Ballet’s international program and gave audiences in Kazakhstan an opportunity to experience a classical work through the artistic perspective of another national ballet tradition.
