Silicon Valley is the prize. At AI & Digital Bridge 2026, three Kazakh startups will be selected, with one representative from each winning team receiving the opportunity to stay at the Draper University campus in California and gain direct exposure to the international startup ecosystem, DKNews.kz reports.
Astana Hub is launching the Draper Founders Challenge together with Draper University. Ten finalists will pitch their projects to venture and startup experts at AI & Digital Bridge 2026, which will take place in Astana.
Only three teams will be chosen from 10 finalists
After the preliminary selection, ten startups will advance to the final. Their projects will be judged by Chris Joannou, VP Venture Ecosystem at Draper University, Tanat Uskembayev, Managing Director of Astana Hub, and Aidana Bergazdenova, CEO of Astana Hub Ventures.
The competition will produce three winning teams. One representative from each will receive the opportunity to stay at the Draper University campus in San Mateo, California.
That detail matters: the opportunity applies to one representative from each winning startup, rather than the entire team.
Astana Hub will also provide the winners with access to the Hero Training 2027 accelerator programme.
Draper University presents Hero Training as an intensive Silicon Valley programme for entrepreneurs, combining business development, fundraising preparation, mentorship and access to an international network.
An idea alone is not enough: startups need an MVP and market proof
The Draper Founders Challenge is not aimed at projects that exist only in a pitch deck.
Kazakh technology startups are eligible if they have reached the MVP stage or beyond. Their product must already be developed, launched or undergoing pilot testing.
Organisers also want evidence of actual market demand. This may include early users or customers, pilot projects, revenue, pre-orders, letters of intent, partnerships or other proof that the product is needed.
For founders, that raises the bar considerably. A strong technology concept will not be enough — teams must demonstrate that their product has already moved beyond the idea stage and encountered real market demand.
Founders will have just three minutes to pitch
Another selection requirement is English.
Founders must be at least 18 years old, and teams must be ready to present their projects in English. The final format is tight: three minutes for the pitch, followed by two minutes of questions and answers.
In those five minutes, startups will have to explain the product, demonstrate demand and show that the project can scale internationally.
For a competition whose main opportunity leads directly into the Silicon Valley ecosystem, English is more than a formal requirement. It becomes the working language of the next stage.
Physical AI, robotics and quantum technologies are priorities
The Draper Founders Challenge is not limited to conventional software startups.
Priority areas include Physical AI and robotics, Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS), Biotech & Life Sciences, quantum computing, space, defence, aviation and aerospace technologies.
The competition is also open to projects in FinTech, MedTech, HealthTech, SportTech, industrial manufacturing and biomanufacturing. The list is not exhaustive.
The range suggests that organisers are looking beyond app developers and software services. Startups building complex technologies with international scaling potential also have a place in the final.
Applications close on September 22
The application window is limited.
Startups can apply for the Draper Founders Challenge until September 22.
AI & Digital Bridge 2026 will take place in Astana from October 1 to 3. The forum will bring together global technology companies, international experts, startups, entrepreneurs and investors.
October 1 will feature a high-level programme involving senior government officials, international delegations and technology industry leaders. Participation in that day’s events will be by special invitation.
The open programme will run on October 2 and 3, with ticket holders able to attend events during both days.
The forum is organised by Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development, Astana Hub and the Astana city administration.
Kazakh startups already have experience with Draper University
Cooperation between Astana Hub and Draper University did not begin with this competition.
Earlier, we reported on how Astana Hub startups used Hero Training as a route into Silicon Valley. The new Draper Founders Challenge now brings the selection process directly onto the AI & Digital Bridge stage in Astana.
The route is straightforward: ten Kazakh teams will first pitch to international experts, and only three winning startups will secure the opportunity to send a representative to Draper University in Silicon Valley.
For teams hoping to make that shortlist, the first decisive date is already set: September 22, 2026.
