Aviation technology company SITA has introduced Border Flow Lane, a system designed to let pre-cleared travelers pass through immigration without stopping at a gate, kiosk or officer’s checkpoint. The company says it could make border clearance up to eight times faster than conventional automated border gates, DKNews.kz reports.
Announced on September 9, the system combines advance passenger screening with identity verification as travelers move through the immigration hall on arrival.
Checks begin before departure
Conventional border controls require passengers to stop and present their documents, either to an officer or at an automated gate. Border Flow Lane shifts part of that process to before departure, using passenger data to support earlier clearance decisions.
SITA estimates that more than 75% of travelers could be cleared before they fly. This would allow border officers to devote more attention to cases requiring further examination.
The claim of clearance up to eight times faster comes from the developer. Its announcement does not detail the comparison methodology or provide results from trials at named airports.
More capacity within existing terminals
SITA’s aim is to help airports accommodate more passengers within their existing immigration halls. Reducing the number of people who need to stop could ease congestion without requiring additional floor space.
Pedro Alves, SITA’s Senior Vice President of Borders, explained the approach:
“The aviation industry cannot build its way out of every capacity challenge. Traveler demand changes constantly, but airport infrastructure doesn't. The opportunity is to make better decisions before travelers arrive, helping trusted travelers keep moving while creating more capacity from the infrastructure already in place. Stopping becomes the exception, not the rule.”
Travelers choose whether to use biometrics
According to SITA, participation is voluntary: travelers choose whether to use the system and authorize the use of their biometric data.
Border authorities retain responsibility for identity checks and clearance decisions. Officers can still stop any traveler at any stage for further checks.
The announcement does not identify airports where Border Flow Lane is already operating or give a deployment timetable. It also makes no announcement of a rollout in Kazakhstan.
