The Almaty-based UN center is moving into focus.
Kazakhstan is positioning the regional platform as a mechanism for advancing sustainable development projects across Central Asia and Afghanistan, DKNews.kz reports.
The issue was discussed during a meeting between Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tileuberdi and UN Development Programme Administrator Alexander De Croo on the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Almaty UN center becomes a key area of cooperation
The two sides reviewed bilateral and regional cooperation linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, with particular attention to projects involving the UN Regional Centre for the Sustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan.
For Kazakhstan, the initiative goes beyond a diplomatic platform. The center is intended to support regional coordination on sustainable development and strengthen cooperation among Central Asian countries and Afghanistan.
UNDP is expected to play a significant role in projects implemented through the regional center.
UNDP also involved in Kazakhstan’s environmental agenda
Tileuberdi thanked UNDP for its support in organizing and holding the Regional Environmental Summit in April.
The summit served as a regional platform for discussions on climate and environmental challenges affecting Central Asia. That agenda closely overlaps with the broader sustainable development mandate of the UN regional center in Almaty.
Both initiatives share a regional focus, extending beyond Kazakhstan to wider cooperation across Central Asia.

Following the talks, Kazakhstan and UNDP reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in support of sustainable development and regional stability.
The official statement did not disclose a specific list of new projects, implementation timelines or funding volumes.
Kazakhstan has been increasing its emphasis on regional environmental and sustainable development initiatives, with the Almaty-based UN center emerging as one of the key platforms for coordinating that agenda.
