Kazakhstan and Malawi are now diplomatic partners.
Beyond the formal agreement, the two countries have already outlined a practical trade agenda: Kazakhstan is considering wheat supplies to Malawi, while the African nation is interested in bringing tea, coffee and macadamia nuts to the Kazakh market, DKNews.kz reports.
The agreement was reached on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly during a meeting between Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi and Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation George Thapatula Chaponda.
Kazakhstan and Malawi formally establish diplomatic relations
The two ministers signed a Joint Communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Malawi.
The document formally places relations between the two countries on an interstate footing. The sides agreed to strengthen political dialogue and expand practical cooperation, including direct contacts between their foreign ministries, companies and educational institutions.
They also discussed the broader prospects for bilateral ties and further cooperation in several sectors.
Kazakhstan could supply wheat to Malawi
One of the most concrete areas discussed was food trade.
The two sides considered the possibility of supplying Kazakh wheat to Malawi. No volumes, timelines, logistics routes or commercial terms have been announced, meaning the talks remain at the stage of exploring a potential trade channel rather than implementing a confirmed contract.
Malawi, in turn, expressed interest in promoting its own products on the Kazakh market, including tea, coffee and macadamia nuts.
This gives the emerging relationship an immediate commercial dimension: grain exports from Kazakhstan in one direction and agricultural products from Malawi in the other.
Mining and digitalisation enter the agenda
Agriculture was not the only sector discussed.
The two countries also identified mining, digitalisation, education and agriculture as areas where cooperation could develop.
No specific investment projects, participating companies or financing volumes have been announced so far. At this stage, the talks have defined priority sectors rather than produced ready-made deals.
The two sides also expressed interest in building direct ties between businesses and educational institutions alongside regular contacts between their foreign ministries.
New diplomatic ties come with a trade agenda
The launch of diplomatic relations between Kazakhstan and Malawi was not limited to protocol.
The meeting immediately produced a list of goods that could eventually move between the two markets: Kazakh wheat to Malawi, and Malawian tea, coffee and macadamia nuts to Kazakhstan.
The next practical test will be whether the political understanding develops into direct business negotiations. The two countries agreed to maintain regular dialogue and continue developing bilateral cooperation.
