German industrial investment could expand into two new areas in Kazakhstan. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and D.A.R. Metall AG Chairman Christian Artner discussed a joint metal processing project as well as the company’s potential involvement in municipal and industrial waste processing in Alatau City, DKNews.kz reports.
The meeting took place in Berlin on September 29 during Tokayev’s official visit to Germany. The President said cooperation with D.A.R. Metall AG and the introduction of advanced German technologies were aligned with Kazakhstan’s industrial and environmental priorities.
Joint metal processing project discussed
Metal processing was one of the main areas discussed during the meeting.
Tokayev highlighted the strategic importance of the metallurgical industry for Kazakhstan and briefed Artner on the reconstruction of Qarmet, one of the country’s major industrial enterprises.
The talks also covered the possibility of implementing new projects jointly with Qarmet.
For Kazakhstan, deeper metal processing is particularly relevant because it can increase the amount of value added domestically rather than limiting industrial activity to the production and export of raw or semi-processed materials.
No investment amount, production capacity or timetable for the proposed metal processing project was announced.
D.A.R. Metall interested in Alatau City waste project
A second potential area of cooperation links industrial investment with waste management.
Artner expressed D.A.R. Metall AG’s interest in participating in a project to process municipal and industrial waste in Alatau City.
This would give the German company a potential role in the infrastructure being developed around Kazakhstan’s new city, while combining industrial processing technology with the country’s environmental objectives.
The proposal remains at the discussion stage. The parties did not announce details on the planned technology, processing capacity or financing structure.
Qarmet could become another area of cooperation
Tokayev specifically drew attention to the ongoing reconstruction of Qarmet.
The company operates Kazakhstan’s major integrated steelmaking complex in Temirtau, making its modernisation significant for the wider metallurgical sector.
D.A.R. Metall AG indicated that it is interested in new projects with Qarmet, potentially adding another German industrial partner to the modernisation of Kazakhstan’s metals industry.
Artner also reaffirmed the company’s readiness to continue implementing production projects in Kazakhstan.
The combination of metal processing, cooperation with Qarmet and waste recycling gives the talks a broader industrial focus: German technology could be applied both to traditional metallurgy and to projects designed to recover value from industrial and municipal waste.
The practical scope of that cooperation will depend on the next stage of negotiations. For now, the Berlin meeting has identified three potential directions — a joint metal processing project, cooperation with Qarmet and waste processing infrastructure in Alatau City — without announcing investment figures or implementation deadlines.
