Trade between Kazakhstan and Germany reached $4.5 billion in 2025. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said economic ties continue to expand as more than 1,400 companies with German capital are now registered in Kazakhstan, DKNews.kz reports.
Tokayev presented the figures during expanded talks with German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin on September 29. The meeting focused on trade, investment and the expansion of cooperation in education, medicine and culture.
German investment in Kazakhstan reaches $8 billion
Tokayev described Germany as Kazakhstan’s key European partner, pointing to stronger political dialogue and growing contacts between the two countries’ business communities.
«Today, our relations are steadily advancing, encompassing an increasingly broad range of areas of cooperation. This positive momentum is largely driven by active political dialogue at the highest level, underpinned by consistent interaction between the two governments and contacts between the business communities of our countries. The meetings of the Intergovernmental Working Group and the Kazakhstan-German Business Council for Strategic Cooperation held in Berlin ahead of my visit confirmed our shared commitment to further expanding mutually beneficial partnership», — Tokayev said.
Investment has become one of the central elements of that relationship.
According to the President, cumulative German investment in Kazakhstan over the past 20 years has reached $8 billion.
More than 1,400 companies with German capital are currently registered in the country.
Trade maintains momentum in 2026
Bilateral trade reached $4.5 billion in 2025, while the first seven months of 2026 brought more than $2.6 billion in trade between the two countries.
Tokayev highlighted the figures as evidence that economic cooperation continues to expand.
«In 2025, bilateral trade reached 4.5 billion US dollars. Positive momentum has continued this year. In the first seven months of this year, bilateral trade exceeded 2.6 billion. More than 1,400 companies with German capital are currently registered in Kazakhstan. Over the past 20 years, cumulative investment inflows from Germany have amounted to 8 billion. Our cooperation with leading German companies such as CLAAS Group, Rhenus Logistics, Siemens Energy, Linde and others is a strong example of our practical engagement», — the President said.
The figures also give the political relationship a measurable economic dimension: Germany’s role in Kazakhstan increasingly involves companies operating directly in manufacturing, logistics, energy and other sectors rather than trade alone.
German companies expand their role in Kazakhstan
Tokayev specifically pointed to CLAAS Group, Rhenus Logistics, Siemens Energy and Linde as examples of practical cooperation.
Several of these partnerships are connected to Kazakhstan’s wider industrial strategy.
During his current visit to Germany, Tokayev has separately discussed transport and logistics projects, deeper industrial localisation, German financial participation in Kazakhstan and cooperation in advanced technologies.
The discussions show where Astana sees the next stage of the relationship: attracting not only capital, but also manufacturing, engineering expertise and technology.
Education and medicine added to the agenda
The expanded talks were not limited to economics.
Tokayev and Steinmeier also discussed strengthening cultural and humanitarian ties, with higher education, medicine and culture identified as priority areas.
The two presidents reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in these sectors.
This adds another dimension to a relationship that is approaching an important milestone. In 2027, Kazakhstan and Germany will mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
The economic figures presented in Berlin set a clear benchmark ahead of that anniversary: $4.5 billion in annual trade, $8 billion in German investment over two decades and more than 1,400 companies with German capital registered in Kazakhstan.
Earlier, we reported on the agenda of Tokayev’s official visit to Germany and the series of political, investment and technology meetings planned in Berlin and Munich. The expanded talks with Steinmeier put concrete trade and investment figures behind that broader partnership.
