How digital tools are changing crime prevention in Kazakhstan

Online fraud is declining. Kazakhstan has blocked 8,700 fraudulent and phishing websites and prevented 187 million fraudulent calls since the beginning of 2026, DKNews.kz reports.

Interior Minister Yerzhan Sadenov presented the figures to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on October 5, according to the official statement from the Akorda presidential press service. The meeting also covered overall crime trends, cold cases, international cooperation and the growing use of digital tools to improve public safety.

Fraud victims recover more than 6.5 billion tenge

Financial recovery was one of the key indicators presented during the meeting.

A total of 49 billion tenge has been recovered since the beginning of the year in criminal cases investigated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

That is 22.5% more than during the same period last year.

More than 6.5 billion tenge of the recovered funds has been returned to victims of online fraud.

At the same time, the number of online fraud cases decreased by 21%.

Measures taken to combat such crimes include:

  • blocking 8,700 fraudulent and phishing websites;
  • preventing 187 million fraudulent calls;
  • returning more than 6.5 billion tenge to online fraud victims.

Overall crime falls by 15%

Crime across Kazakhstan decreased by 15% during the first nine months of 2026.

In absolute terms, the country recorded more than 11,000 fewer crimes compared with the same period last year.

Declines were recorded in the most serious categories of crime as well as offences:

  • in public places;
  • on the streets;
  • in the domestic sphere;
  • involving minors;
  • involving people with previous convictions.

More than 2,500 cold cases solved

Police have also made progress in investigating crimes committed in previous years.

More than 2,500 such cases have been solved.

Modern forensic tools, including DNA analysis, are helping investigators identify people linked to crimes committed many years ago.

Citizens help police solve 357 crimes

Public participation has also contributed to law enforcement efforts.

Since the beginning of the year, information provided by citizens, volunteers and public assistants has helped prevent more than 12,000 administrative offences.

Their reports also contributed to solving 357 crimes.

Sadenov told the President that citizens are becoming increasingly active in assisting police in maintaining law and public order.

More than 1,000 wanted individuals located

International law enforcement cooperation was another area discussed during the meeting.

Authorities have established the whereabouts of 1,039 wanted individuals.

Of these, 154 wanted persons were detained outside Kazakhstan.

At the request of foreign authorities, another 537 wanted offenders were identified and detained in Kazakhstan.

Cameras help identify more than 2,200 people

Digital technology is playing an increasing role in public safety.

More than 2,200 individuals have been identified and detained through Kazakhstan’s video surveillance network.

Digital solutions are also being deployed on the country’s roads.

Combined with stronger preventive measures, these tools contributed to a 5% decrease in road traffic accidents.

The number of road fatalities fell by 16%, while injuries declined by 7%.

Following the meeting, President Tokayev issued a number of instructions aimed at further strengthening the rule of law and public safety across Kazakhstan.
