Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan are strengthening economic cooperation. Presidents Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Serdar Berdimuhamedov discussed joint projects in energy, industry, agriculture and transport, focusing on the implementation of existing agreements and future cooperation, DKNews.kz reports.

According to the official information published by Akorda, the meeting took place on October 8, 2026, in Awaza, Turkmenistan, during Tokayev's working visit.

Energy and Transport Take Centre Stage

The two presidents reviewed progress on previously reached agreements and discussed potential joint initiatives across several sectors.

The talks covered five broad areas:

  • Energy cooperation and joint projects
  • Industrial development
  • Agriculture and agricultural partnerships
  • Transport cooperation

Other areas of bilateral economic engagement

For Kazakhstan, transport and energy are particularly relevant because of the country's geographical position and its interest in developing international trade connections.

Turkmenistan is a neighbouring country with access to the Caspian Sea, making bilateral transport cooperation relevant to Kazakhstan's broader connectivity ambitions.

However, the official account did not identify specific new projects, investment amounts or implementation deadlines.

The meeting therefore focused on reviewing existing commitments and discussing future cooperation rather than announcing a new package of signed agreements.

Tokayev Highlights Strong Relations with Turkmenistan

During the meeting, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev thanked Serdar Berdimuhamedov for the warm welcome and hospitality.

The Kazakh President emphasised that relations between the two countries are rooted in longstanding friendship, good-neighbourliness and mutual support.

Both leaders also acknowledged positive momentum in bilateral cooperation across a wide range of areas.

The discussion reflected a shared intention to maintain political dialogue while developing practical cooperation in sectors that matter to both economies.

Cultural Cooperation Remains Part of the Agenda

Economic projects were not the only subject of the talks.

The presidents also discussed strengthening cultural and humanitarian ties, an area that supports educational, cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the neighbouring countries.

The official statement did not announce specific new programmes or initiatives in this field.

Both leaders additionally reviewed the schedule of upcoming joint events, indicating that bilateral contacts will continue beyond the Awaza meeting.

Existing Agreements Remain the Immediate Priority

The meeting took place against the backdrop of wider regional discussions involving Central Asian countries and Azerbaijan.

On October 7, foreign ministers from the participating states had already discussed draft documents and the agenda for their upcoming leaders' meeting in Turkmenistan. The preparations covered economic cooperation, energy, transport and regional connectivity.

The bilateral talks between Tokayev and Berdimuhamedov addressed several of those same economic sectors, although the official statement did not link particular projects to the wider summit agenda.

For now, the most concrete outcome is the continued review of existing bilateral agreements. Whether the discussions produce additional investment commitments or specific project announcements remains to be established.

Previously, we reported on preparations for the Central Asia–Azerbaijan summit in Turkmenistan, where regional ministers discussed documents covering trade, energy, transport and broader cooperation.
