China has overtaken the United States, while Kazakhstan has entered the global top 35. The 2026 ranking of the world's most powerful countries reveals a surprising shift in the global balance of influence. Russia has fallen outside the top 10, while Kazakhstan ranks ahead of several major economies in the Middle East and Central Asia, DKNews.kz reports.

According to the World Population Review, the ranking covers 100 countries. It assesses international influence through a combination of factors, including economic strength, military capabilities, political influence and other measures of national power.

China takes the lead as the US drops to second place

China tops the 2026 ranking, followed by the United States in second place. India completes the top three.

The results differ significantly from the 2023 US News ranking, when the United States held first place, China ranked second and Russia completed the top three.

The 10 most powerful countries in the 2026 World Population Review ranking are:

Rank

1

China

2

United States

3

India

4

Germany

5

Japan

6

South Korea

7

France

8

United Kingdom

9

Mexico

10

Italy

Asia's strong showing is particularly striking. China, India, Japan and South Korea account for four of the top six positions.

However, the ranking should not be interpreted as a simple comparison of military spending or economic size. It also reflects international relationships, political leadership and broader global influence.

Kazakhstan ranks 34th, ahead of the UAE and Saudi Arabia

For Kazakhstan, some of the most interesting results appear just outside the global top 30.

The country ranks 34th out of 100 nations, immediately behind Hungary and one position ahead of Egypt.

Several countries with significant economic and geopolitical influence appear nearby.

Kazakhstan's position ahead of the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia is particularly noteworthy.

Both Gulf nations play prominent roles in international investment and energy markets, yet Kazakhstan places higher in this overall ranking.

That does not mean Kazakhstan outperforms them in every category. The final position represents a combined assessment rather than an absolute advantage in economic development, defense capabilities or investment attractiveness.

Russia misses the top 10 as Turkey ranks 21st

Another unexpected result involves Russia.

The country occupies 11th place, ranking behind Italy, Mexico, the United Kingdom and France.

Turkey stands at 21st, followed by Poland in 22nd and Switzerland in 23rd.

These positions highlight how strongly a country's overall ranking depends on the methodology used.

Military strength alone does not guarantee a leading position when economic influence, international partnerships and political leadership are also considered.

There is also an important distinction between the datasets. Although the World Population Review table is labeled for 2026, its accompanying explanation refers to the 2023 US News results.

Consequently, differences between the rankings should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that a particular country's international influence has increased or declined.

Kazakhstan stands 37 places above Uzbekistan

The regional comparison is especially revealing.

Kazakhstan ranks 34th, while Uzbekistan occupies 71st place, creating a gap of 37 positions between the two Central Asian neighbors.

Other countries relevant to Kazakhstan's international relationships appear further down the list:

  • Pakistan — 42nd
  • Iran — 46th
  • Belarus — 57th
  • Qatar — 64th
  • Uzbekistan — 71st
  • Mongolia — 94th

These results illustrate how countries are positioned in this particular assessment of international influence.

They do not directly measure living standards, household incomes, infrastructure quality or economic development.

For businesses evaluating international markets, such rankings can provide additional context. However, investment decisions still require detailed analysis of economic indicators, regulations and country-specific risks.

Why economic strength does not always guarantee a higher ranking

A country's international influence extends beyond the size of its gross domestic product.

The US News methodology referenced by World Population Review considers several characteristics, including political leadership, economic influence, military alliances and international partnerships.

As a result, countries with the largest economies or strongest armed forces do not necessarily occupy the highest positions.

Mexico's ninth-place finish and Russia's 11th-place position illustrate how different factors can influence the overall outcome.

World Population Review also describes the United States as an established superpower and China as a potential superpower.

This distinction demonstrates that a country's position in a particular ranking does not necessarily correspond to its broader geopolitical status.

What does 34th place mean for Kazakhstan?

Kazakhstan's result is particularly significant from a regional perspective.

The country ranks in the upper half of the 100-nation list and stands considerably higher than Uzbekistan, another Central Asian economy seeking to strengthen its international economic connections.

Still, 34th place does not automatically translate into stronger investment inflows or prove that Kazakhstan's diplomatic influence has increased over the past year.

International standing can be measured in several ways.

For example, we previously covered Kazakhstan's position in the 2026 Global Soft Power Index, which examines international recognition, reputation and influence.

The Brand Finance assessment approaches national influence from a different perspective, placing greater emphasis on how countries are perceived internationally.

Meanwhile, the World Population Review ranking places Kazakhstan 34th and Uzbekistan 71st.

The 37-place gap is one of the more striking findings for Central Asia. However, it should not be interpreted as evidence of an equivalent difference in the two countries' economic strength or political capabilities.

Understanding those differences requires comparing individual indicators rather than relying on a single overall ranking.
