Chinese and foreign media representatives attending the 7th World Media Summit in Beijing on Thursday called for stronger dialogue and cooperation to address global security challenges and promote common development.

A forum on powering intelligent media was held on the sidelines of the summit, bringing together participants to discuss how media can leverage advanced technologies, build consensus and contribute to global security and shared development.

Ren Weidong, deputy editor-in-chief of Xinhua News Agency, said in his address that media outlets should not be bystanders or onlookers in the face of global security challenges, but should strive to shoulder their responsibilities.

Media should serve as guardians of factual reporting, adopters of advanced technologies, disseminators of diverse voices and promoters of exchanges and cooperation, helping pool collective wisdom to safeguard global security and promote sustainable development, Ren said.

Abdul Hakim, president director of Indonesia's Antara News Agency, said opportunities created by advances in energy infrastructure and computing capacity should benefit developing countries, and digital transformation should enable more people outside major cities to gain access to credible information.

People should embrace innovation while upholding principles, and news production should be accurate, fair and honest, he said.

Participants of the forum also called for stronger cooperation in sharing technological achievements and building professional capabilities, promoting the development of artificial intelligence in a safer, fairer and more inclusive direction.

The 7th World Media Summit, co-hosted by Xinhua News Agency and the People's Government of Beijing Municipality, is to be held from Nov. 5 to 9 in Beijing.

Under the theme "Media in the Intelligent Age: From Consensus to Action", the summit brings together nearly 500 delegates from nearly 330 mainstream media outlets, think tanks, government departments and international organizations from 112 countries and regions around the world.

The mechanism of the World Media Summit was initiated in 2009 and is an important global platform for high-end media exchange and cooperation.
