Kazakhstan and Tajikistan are strengthening their strategic partnership. Presidents Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Emomali Rahmon held talks in Astana on November 7, 2026, focusing on trade, investment, transport, energy and regional cooperation, according to the official information published by Akorda.

The Tajik President arrived in Kazakhstan on an official visit. The negotiations highlighted growing economic ties between the two countries, with bilateral trade exceeding $1 billion in the first nine months of 2026, DKNews.kz reports.

The leaders also discussed cooperation in agriculture, water resources, industry and digitalization, as well as plans to open a new complex for the Embassy of Tajikistan in Astana.

Tokayev welcomes Rahmon with an official ceremony at Akorda

The visit began with a formal welcoming ceremony at the Akorda presidential residence.

In honor of the Tajik leader, helicopters of Kazakhstan's Air Defense Forces performed a flypast carrying the national flags of Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.

The two presidents introduced members of their delegations, while the commander of the honor guard delivered a ceremonial report. The presidential orchestra performed the national anthems of both countries.

Following the ceremony, Tokayev and Rahmon proceeded to the meeting hall for bilateral negotiations.

Tokayev says Kazakhstan and Tajikistan have no unresolved issues

Welcoming his counterpart, Tokayev emphasized the longstanding friendship between the two countries and the importance of developing their strategic partnership.

«Today, we can speak with full confidence of a strategic partnership and alliance between our two brotherly nations. There are no outstanding issues in our cooperation. There are issues that require consideration and resolution in order to further advance our multifaceted cooperation. We look only ahead in terms of creating new opportunities, implementing mutually beneficial projects and fulfilling the agreements reached. The Kazakh people hold the people of Tajikistan, an ancient nation with a rich history, a distinctive culture and a remarkable spiritual heritage, in sincere respect and warm regard. Under your wise and far-sighted leadership, Tajikistan has made impressive progress across many areas as it pursues wide-ranging reforms. These reforms are delivering sustained economic growth and improving the well-being of the people,» President Tokayev said.

The President stressed that the relationship is focused on implementing existing agreements and identifying new opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.

His remarks also highlighted the importance Kazakhstan places on political dialogue with Tajikistan as a Central Asian partner.

Kazakhstan remains among Tajikistan's three largest trading partners

Economic cooperation was one of the central topics of the negotiations.

Tokayev noted that government agencies and businesses in both countries are working to implement previously reached agreements, expand the range of traded goods and increase freight transportation.

«I must note that the governments of our countries are working actively to fully implement all the agreements reached. Thanks to the measures taken, the range of goods is expanding and supplies of various products are increasing. Rail freight transport for exports and imports is growing. Business contacts have intensified. Commercial agreements reached following business forums and dedicated trade missions are being systematically implemented. Against this backdrop, our annual trade turnover consistently exceeds 1 billion US dollars, enabling Kazakhstan to maintain its position among Tajikistan’s three largest trading partners,» the Head of State stated.

The increase in railway freight volumes reflects the importance of transport connections for trade between the two countries.

Business forums and trade missions have also contributed to expanding commercial contacts and supporting the implementation of agreements between companies.

Bilateral trade exceeds $1 billion in nine months of 2026

President Rahmon provided updated figures showing continued growth in economic relations.

According to the Tajik leader, bilateral trade exceeded $1 billion during January–September 2026, an increase of almost 26% compared with the corresponding period of 2025.

«Over the first nine months of this year, trade turnover between our countries exceeded 1 billion US dollars. This is almost 26% more than in the same period last year. Investment cooperation is developing steadily. Today, more than 130 enterprises with Kazakh capital are registered in Tajikistan. More than 580 enterprises with Tajik participation operate in Kazakhstan, including 500 wholly owned by Tajik investors. This is a very good, positive sign. Cultural and humanitarian ties continue to show positive momentum. Cultural, educational and academic exchanges take place on a regular basis. Our shared task today is to bring new practical results to our strategic partnership and allied relations. It is important to ensure the consistent implementation of the agreements reached at the highest level. I am convinced that today’s talks will enable us to identify concrete steps to further develop the full range of our cooperation,» Emomali Rahmon stated.

The figures indicate that the relationship is supported by a growing business presence in both countries.

More than 130 enterprises with Kazakh capital are registered in Tajikistan, while Kazakhstan hosts over 580 enterprises with Tajik participation. Of those operating in Kazakhstan, 500 are wholly owned by Tajik investors.

These numbers reflect registered business activity rather than the value of investment flows or the financial performance of individual enterprises.

Transport, energy and water resources on the agenda

During the talks, the presidents paid particular attention to expanding practical cooperation across several economic sectors.

The main areas included:

  • Trade and investment cooperation.
  • Transport, logistics and railway freight connections.
  • Energy and industrial development.
  • Agriculture and water resources.
  • Digitalization and technological cooperation.

These areas are particularly relevant to economic development in Central Asia, where cross-border transport connections and the management of shared resources are important components of regional cooperation.

The negotiations focused on expanding existing ties and identifying practical steps for future projects. The announcement did not specify new investment amounts or individual contracts signed during the meeting.

Cultural and educational exchanges bring the countries closer

Beyond economic cooperation, Tokayev highlighted the development of cultural and humanitarian relations.

He pointed to reciprocal cultural events, educational partnerships and exchanges involving young people, scientists and intellectuals.

«Reciprocal Days of Culture are being held, and monuments to prominent figures are being unveiled. A bust of Abai has been unveiled in Dushanbe and a bust of Ibn Sina in Astana. Cooperation in education and youth policy is also at a high level. Forums bringing together young people, scientists and intellectuals are taking place. We therefore have every reason to take pride and rejoice in the results achieved in our cooperation. Today, we are to take part in a very important event – the opening of the new building of the Embassy of Tajikistan in Astana. Well, of course, it is actually not just one building, but a complex of buildings. All of this is impressive and shows that Tajikistan will be represented in our country, one might say, on a permanent basis. This is, of course, a most fitting reflection of our fraternal relations,» Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized.

The monuments to Abai in Dushanbe and Ibn Sina in Astana symbolize the cultural connections between the two countries.

Educational and academic exchanges provide another channel for maintaining bilateral relations beyond government-level meetings.

New Tajik Embassy complex to open in Astana

The presidents are also scheduled to participate in the opening of the new Embassy of Tajikistan complex in Kazakhstan's capital.

Tokayev described the development as an important event in bilateral relations, noting that the diplomatic facility consists of several buildings rather than a single structure.

The new complex represents an expansion of Tajikistan's diplomatic infrastructure in Kazakhstan.

Its opening adds a visible diplomatic dimension to the official visit, alongside negotiations on economic cooperation and regional issues.

What the talks mean for Kazakhstan and Tajikistan

The November 7 meeting demonstrated the breadth of cooperation between the two Central Asian countries.

Trade growth of almost 26% during the first nine months of 2026 provides evidence of expanding economic activity, while the number of registered enterprises highlights business links in both directions.

Transport, energy, agriculture and water management remain important areas for further cooperation, particularly as both countries seek to strengthen regional connectivity and economic development.

The leaders emphasized the importance of implementing existing agreements rather than limiting cooperation to political declarations.

The practical results of the visit will depend on the next steps taken by government agencies and businesses to develop the projects discussed during the negotiations.

The opening of the new Tajik Embassy complex in Astana will also mark another stage in the development of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
