The Story of a Doll and Doll Maker at the Opera House Stage

On Defender of the Fatherland Day, Astana Opera presented to the residents and guests of the capital a festive performance of the famous comic ballet Coppélia, staged by the outstanding choreographer Roland Petit to Léo Delibes’ music. On May 7, principal dancer Olzhas Tarlanov made a brilliant debut as Dr. Coppélius, Delovoy Kazakhstan reports.

That evening, ballet soloist Shugyla Adepkhan portrayed the flirtatious Swanhilda, and the ballet company’s principal dancer, Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan Yerkin Rakhmatullayev, performed her beloved Franz.

The 20th century choreographic masterpiece was also featured for the audience on May 6th. Ballet stars, Honoured Workers of Kazakhstan Aigerim Beketayeva, Bakhtiyar Adamzhan and Rustem Seitbekov, performed the main parts of Swanhilda, Franz and Dr. Coppélius.

The spectacular ballet Coppélia was created to the libretto by Charles-Louis-Étienne Nuitter and Arthur Saint-Léon based on the novel Der Sandmann by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann. At Astana Opera, the production was staged by the ballet master Luigi Bonino, who personally performed Dr. Coppélius on the first premiere day. Music director is Arman Urazgaliyev, set and costume designer is Ezio Frigerio, assistant costume designer is Franca Squarciapino, lighting designer and technical coordinator is Jean-Michel Desire. The artistic director of the ballet company is the People’s Artist of Russia Altynai Asylmuratova.

The Astana Opera Symphony Orchestra performed under the baton of conductor Ruslan Baimurzin.
