Kazakhstan's Role in Central Asia: Mutual Interest in Cooperation with Sweden

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Sweden S. Nurtayev met with the President of the City Council of Stockholm City Hall Olle Burell, DKNews.kz reports.

During the meeting the invitation on behalf of the Akim (mayor) of Astana to become the guest of honor at the traditional annual celebrations of the Day of the Capital of Kazakhstan was passed to the President of Stockholm City Council.

During the meeting, the Kazakh diplomat acquainted his interlocutor with the political and economic reforms taking place in country, and discussed a range of bilateral regional cooperation issues relating to infrastructure projects, culture, tourism, investment climate, as well as the possibilities of the "Astana" International Financial Centre and an international technology park of IT start-ups in Central Asia "Astana Hub".

Significant potential for expanding trade and economic cooperation was noted, especially in the areas of environmental transformation, digitalization and transport. In this regard, there was an exchange of views on the possibilities of institutionalization of cooperation between the two capitals, including visits of delegations and signing of a MoU, which could include all the above-mentioned areas of interaction.

The Ambassador of Kazakhstan stressed the readiness of the Kazakh side to joint implementation of projects in the economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres, emphasizing the considerable experience of Stockholm in the field of urban sustainable development and green technologies.

Besides, taking into account position of O. Burell as a Vice-Chairman of Board of Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), interest in Swedish experience in automation of water management systems as well as in public water management system of the Kingdom was noted. Sides agreed to deepen interaction in this sector and exchange contacts between relevant competent authorities of Kazakhstan and SIWI for further cooperation.

In his turn, O.Burell noted the leading role of Kazakhstan in Central Asia, which carries out serious reforms and effective social and economic policy, modernization of economy and involvement of high technology. He highly appreciated progressive development of Astana city, and expressed readiness to establish cooperation between the capitals. A number of major international events of Kazakhstan, held in Astana - OSCE Summit, the Congresses of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, the International Specialized Exhibition "EXPO-2017" and others attracted special attention of the President of Stockholm City Council.

As a result of the meeting, both sides agreed to continue the dialogue in order to further develop joint projects in various areas of cooperation.
