Galymzhan Nauryzbayev is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Nazarbayev University (NU).

The project he is working on has the potential to revolutionize communication technologies and become a new driver of economic growth for Kazakhstan—more details in our article.

- Please tell us about your specialization and the focus of your work.

- I specialize in advanced wireless technologies for mobile and satellite communication systems. I lead several projects on cutting-edge technologies that significantly improve communication quality, such as Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) and Fluid Antenna Systems (FAS).

- Can you elaborate on your projects? What are Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces, and what are their advantages?

- Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) have garnered worldwide attention from research groups and companies. The 3GPP organization considers RIS as a component of future 6th-generation (6G) communication networks. These surfaces can reflect and focus signals in specific directions, enhancing signal quality and expanding coverage areas, especially in environments with many obstacles. By optimizing signal propagation, RIS can reduce the power required for transmission, leading to more energy-efficient wireless networks.

They can also dynamically reconfigure to manage the propagation environment, reducing interference and increasing network capacity. Ensuring optimal signal paths minimizes the transmission time between the transmitter and receiver, which lowers latency. RIS can control the direction of signal propagation, making it more difficult for malicious actors to intercept communications, thereby enhancing the security of wireless networks.

- How can your projects benefit Kazakhstan?

- Research in these scientific areas will help create a strong foundation for training modern Kazakh specialists in wireless technologies. These specialists will be in demand in our country and beyond. Moreover, if we integrate these technologies with the Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) architecture, our telecommunications companies can use locally produced equipment. Thus, it will strengthen our economy and position Kazakhstan as a leader in advanced communication technologies!

- What are your plans for scientific research?

- In the future, I plan to launch an advanced research center in the field of 6G in Kazakhstan. I know that my ambitious goal involves many important steps. We will train young specialists and graduate students, attract funding from national agencies, and establish close ties with industry and universities both in Kazakhstan and abroad. This center will become a powerful driver of scientific progress and innovation, making our contribution to the future of wireless technologies significant and noticeable on the global stage. Today, the country is creating science parks and research centers, such as NU, concentrating resources and specialists, and building quality infrastructure and a foundation for research and scientific discoveries. Programs that support young scientists, such as the "Zhas Galym" and "Young Scientists" (up to 40 years old) funding competitions, help attract youth to science. Kazakhstan is actively investing in research and development through government programs and grants. Therefore, everything is achievable.
