In Al-Farabi KazNU, in the lecture hall named after Academician Meirkhan Abdildin, a round table ‘Advantages of using peaceful atom’ was held with the participation of professors, scientists and students of the university, DKnews.kz reports.

The event brought together experts in nuclear physics, ecology, medicine and agriculture. They discussed the prospects of using nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, considered key areas of nuclear energy application in such areas as power engineering, medicine, agriculture and scientific research. Special attention was paid to environmental safety and new technological solutions.

The round table was opened by the moderator - Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Technology Nurzada Beisen. She noted the importance of using nuclear energy for sustainable development, ensuring energy security and reducing carbon footprint, which is especially relevant in the context of global climate change.

Medeu Abishev, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Theoretical and Nuclear Physics of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. He popularly explained why nuclear power appeared on the global agenda. In 2023, the European Commission on decarbonisation declared gas and atom as green energy sources on a par with renewable energy. With global climate destabilisation, floods, hurricanes as a consequence of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere, gas and peaceful atom act as the best alternative to coal. ‘There is an official ban on investing in coal-fired power plants,’ the speaker emphasised. - Nuclear energy can be an important alternative to coal and gas, offering a sustainable source of energy with low greenhouse gas emissions.’

Fyodor Penkov, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Theoretical and Nuclear Physics at Al-Farabi KazNU, delved into the history of nuclear reactors, dwelling on the superiority of fast neutron reactors.

Saule Zhaugasheva, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Theoretical and Nuclear Physics at Al-Farabi KazNU, told about training for the nuclear industry and the ‘Nuclear Physics’ educational programme implemented at the university.

Senior Lecturer of the Department of Theoretical and Nuclear Physics, PhD Yulia Zaripova in her speech touched upon the role of radiation technologies in diagnostics and treatment. Special attention was paid to safety for both patients and medical staff.

The meeting was also addressed by expert scientists of the Department of Theoretical and Nuclear Physics of Al-Farabi KazNU: Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Alexander Yushkov, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Onlasyn Imambek and others.

During the panel discussion, participants discussed the prospects for nuclear technology in the coming decades and possible technological breakthroughs that will help improve its application. Questions also focused on how nuclear power can contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and how to effectively communicate with the public about the benefits and safety of peaceful nuclear energy.

The moderator summarised the roundtable, noting that nuclear energy has great potential for solving many of humanity's modern problems, from energy to medicine and agricultur
