The Permanent Delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan to UNESCO participated in the 220th session of the Executive Board of UNESCO, which was held from 9 to 23 October 2024 at the UNESCO Headquarters.

The session considered a number of issues on the global agenda in the field of education, science, culture, information and communication. Special attention was paid to initiatives aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including safeguarding natural and cultural heritage, promoting gender equality, strengthening inclusive and quality education.

Speaking at the Executive Board session, Permanent Delegate of Kazakhstan to UNESCO Askar Abdrakhmanov, highlighted the importance of the continued work of the category two Central Asian Regional Glaciological Centre under the auspices of the Organization in Almaty, which aims to integrate scientific research, educational programmes and environmental policy development.

“The glaciers of Central Asia play a vital role in providing water resources for millions of people, but they are rapidly shrinking due to climate change. To help find responses to this threat, the regional glaciological centre under the auspices of UNESCO has been established, which is the result of many years of fruitful cooperation between Kazakhstan and the Organization” – he noted.

In this context, the Executive Board of UNESCO decided to instruct the Secretariat to complete all necessary procedures for the renewal of the mandate of the Central Asian Regional Glaciological Centre no later than 31 December 2025 and to sign an agreement with the Republic of Kazakhstan for this purpose.

At the 220th session of the Executive Board, Kazakhstan also co-authored a number of its decisions, including on UNESCO’s Fit for Life sport initiative in tackling violence against women and girls and advancing safe sport for all, advancing progress on the Sustainable Development Goals through UNESCO’s AI initiatives, and countering disinformation for the promotion and protection of freedom of expression and right to information.
