At the headquarters of the World Trade Organization (WTO), pursuant to the decision of the WTO General Council, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the WTO, Kairat Torebayev, officially assumed the position of Chairperson of the Trade Policy Review Body, DKnews.kz reports.
The Trade Policy Review Body is one of the three core bodies of the WTO, alongside the General Council and the Dispute Settlement Body. Its key mandate is to enhance transparency in international trade through regular analysis and discussion of the trade policies of all WTO Members.
For the first time since Kazakhstan joined the WTO, its representative has been appointed to lead such a high-level structure. Furthermore, Kazakhstan has become the first country among the CIS states to chair this key mechanism of global trade governance.
This appointment marks an important recognition of Kazakhstan’s standing as an active and constructive WTO member. It reflects the high level of trust from the international trading community and reaffirms Kazakhstan’s steady contribution to the development of a transparent, inclusive, and fair multilateral trading system.
In his inaugural statement, Permanent Representative Torebayev, expressed his appreciation to his predecessor for the work accomplished and for contributing to the effective functioning of the Trade Policy Review Body. He reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling his duties as Chairperson with full responsibility and to fostering constructive dialogue among WTO members.
In September 2024, Kazakhstan underwent its first Trade Policy Review since acceding to the WTO. Held in Geneva, the review served as a platform to showcase the country’s achievements. International partners highly commended Kazakhstan’s efforts, particularly in diversifying the economy and streamlining trade procedures, thereby reaffirming trust in Kazakhstan as a reliable trading partner.
