On 3 August 2025, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will pay a working visit to Kazakhstan as part of his ongoing engagement across Central Asia, DKnews.kz reports.

During his visit to Almaty, the Secretary-General will meet with the President of Kazakhstan, H.E. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, along with senior government officials and representatives of the UN Country Team.

A Regional Hub for Sustainable Development

A key milestone of the visit will be the signing of an agreement between the United Nations and the Government of Kazakhstan to establish a UN Regional Center for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), serving Central Asia and Afghanistan.

The agreement will be signed by:

  • Mr. Murat Nurtleu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan
  • Mr. Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs

This initiative reflects Kazakhstan’s growing leadership in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and deepening regional cooperation across key areas.

A Strong and Evolving Partnership

This will be Mr. Guterres’s third official visit to Kazakhstan as Secretary-General, reinforcing the strong and growing partnership between Kazakhstan and the United Nations.

The visit highlights Kazakhstan’s long-standing commitment to multilateral diplomacy, peacebuilding, and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

In his remarks, the Secretary-General is expected to underscore the urgency of revitalized multilateralism in tackling today’s shared global and regional challenges - including climate change, digital transformation, and inclusive, sustainable development.

UN-Kazakhstan Cooperation in Action

The United Nations continues to work closely with Kazakhstan across a wide range of areas:

  • Inclusive economic growth
  • Healthcare and education
  • Human rights and rule of law
  • Gender equality and environmental sustainability

In 2024 alone, the UN’s development cooperation with Kazakhstan exceeded $37 million, delivered in close collaboration with national institutions, civil society, and international development partners.

A Forward-Looking Vision

The upcoming launch of the Regional SDG Center in Almaty is more than a symbolic gesture - it is a strategic investment in the region’s collective future. It will provide a platform for joint action, knowledge-sharing, and innovation to accelerate progress toward the SDGs in Central Asia and Afghanistan.

Kazakhstan’s commitment to sustainable development, peace, and regional leadership continues to position the country as a key partner for the United Nations.
