Kazakhstan and the International Committee of the Red Cross discussed the current state and future prospects of cooperation on international humanitarian law during a meeting in Astana, DKNews.kz reports.
First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yerzhan Ashikbayev held talks with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Mirjana Spoljaric, who paid her first official visit to Kazakhstan.
The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration within global initiatives aimed at promoting respect for international humanitarian law.
Support for multilateral cooperation
During the discussions, Ashikbayev reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s commitment to a multilateral system based on the United Nations Charter and international law.
He emphasized the country’s readiness to expand cooperation with the ICRC as part of global efforts to ensure full compliance with humanitarian norms.
Key areas of cooperation discussed included:
- promoting respect for international humanitarian law
- strengthening global humanitarian initiatives
- supporting international security efforts
- expanding institutional dialogue
Officials noted that such cooperation plays an important role in addressing modern humanitarian challenges.
Global initiatives and upcoming conference
The parties also discussed joint work within the Global Initiative to Galvanize Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law.
Preparations for a major international event were also addressed.
In particular, the sides reviewed plans for:
- the High-Level Conference on Humanity in War
- scheduled to take place in Amman, Jordan
- at the end of 2026
The conference is expected to bring together international partners to strengthen commitments to humanitarian principles during armed conflicts.
ICRC highlights Kazakhstan’s contribution
Mirjana Spoljaric praised Kazakhstan’s role in promoting international initiatives aimed at strengthening global security and addressing contemporary challenges.
She also expressed readiness to deepen cooperation with Kazakhstan in the humanitarian field.
Both sides confirmed their interest in further strengthening long-term collaboration at the international, regional, and national levels.
Experts say Kazakhstan’s engagement with international humanitarian organizations reflects the country’s broader commitment to supporting global stability and humanitarian principles.
