Parliamentary ties are expanding. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan plan to strengthen direct contacts between their legislatures while developing cooperation between the regions of the two countries, DKNews.kz reports.
The agenda was discussed during a meeting between Yeraly Tugzhanov, Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan, and Tanzila Narbayeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan.
Parliaments Plan to Expand Direct Cooperation
The two sides focused on strengthening interparliamentary dialogue, including reciprocal visits by parliamentary delegations and the exchange of experience in legislative work.
They also reaffirmed their intention to support cooperation in culture and education, as well as projects promoting gender equality in Central Asia.
The broader foundation of these contacts is the allied relationship between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, supported by dialogue between President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Kazakhstan’s Constitutional Changes Discussed in Tashkent
Yeraly Tugzhanov briefed the Uzbek side on Kazakhstan’s constitutional changes.
Kazakhstan’s new Constitution entered into force on July 1, 2026. Tugzhanov also informed Narbayeva about the first election of Kurultai deputies scheduled for August 23.
The issue was discussed as part of the exchange of information and legislative experience between the two countries.
Regions Get Their Own Cooperation Platform
Another focus of the meeting was the expansion of direct ties between the regions of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
A new mechanism for this work is the Council of Heads of Regions of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Its first meeting was held in Aktau in July 2026 with the participation of Prime Ministers Olzhas Bektenov and Abdulla Aripov.
The platform is intended to strengthen direct contacts between regions, promote joint projects and expand trade and investment cooperation.
For border regions, this creates an additional channel for direct engagement alongside cooperation at the national level.
Aktau Added Momentum to Regional Cooperation
During the meeting, the sides highlighted the role of the Council of Heads of Regions as a new strategic platform for strengthening interregional ties.
The first meeting in Aktau gave additional momentum to cooperation between the regions of the two countries and reinforced the role of direct regional contacts in bilateral relations.
Yeraly Tugzhanov also praised Tanzila Narbayeva’s contribution to strengthening friendship, good-neighborly relations and interparliamentary cooperation between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
The Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis expressed readiness to further expand interparliamentary ties and support democratic processes in the region.
Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan cooperation is now developing through several channels at once: dialogue between the heads of state, governments, parliaments and direct contacts between regions.
