Kazakhstan Promotes Cooperation of Central Asian and South Caucasus Countries with UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction

Permanent Representatives of Central Asia and South Caucasus countries met with Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) at the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan in Geneva, DKNews.kz reports.

In his opening statement Yerlan Alimbayev, Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan, expressed a strong interest of his colleagues in learning more about activities of UNDRR in the regions. In her turn, Mizutori briefed about the activities of the Office in Central Asia and South Caucasus, ongoing and prospective cooperation projects in these regions as well as the implementation of the 2015-2030 Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Noting the importance of the program, the Head of the UNDRR called on the Permanent Representatives to assist in ensuring a high level of participation in the General Assembly mid-term review meeting of the Sendai Framework to be held in New York in May 18-19, 2023.

During the interactive dialogue, the Permanent Representatives of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan provided detailed information on their countries' priorities in this area. Mizutori answered questions on current interaction with the countries of the regions and its development prospects.

At the end of the meeting, participants agreed to continue a close cooperation on Geneva platform.
