Kazakh jewelry in Geneva: history and modern art

Kazakh national art items presented at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, DKNews.kz reports.

A unique event took place at the United Nations in Geneva – a presentation of Kazakh traditional silver jewelry.

The presentation was organised by the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan with the support of the United Nations Women's Guild (UNWG), and was attended by more than 100 guests, spouses of Geneva-based ambassadors, international organizations and women diplomats.

The meeting was opened by UNWG President Ms. Ajkuna Thanati and Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan Yerlan Alimbayev.

Then Ambassador’s spouse Ms. Aktoty Koxegenova gave a detailed presentation about the rich history of Kazakh jewelry, notably the artisanal craft of silversmiths, from the ancient times to the 21st century. Through pictures, videos and the engaging narrative, the guests learned about different styles and techniques of silver jewelry in Kazakhstan and how women wore jewelry pieces.

Moreover, the audience heard from the special guests - Mr. Serik Rysbek, a jewelry designer and craftsman, and Ms. Gulbarshyn Kazbalinova, director of the “Serik Rysbek” art gallery. They displayed an exclusive collection of handmade rings, pendants, bracelets and earrings encrusted with precious stones. Mr. Rysbek combines styles and uses a mix of contemporary and traditional Kazakh techniques to produce unique items, which were received with great enthusiasm from the audience and proved interest of Geneva community in the Kazakh culture.
