Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Kazakhstan has successfully organised the second Media Forum dedicated to discuss the  interaction between the artificial intelligence (AI) and information manipulation  as well as share the insights about the  opportunities and risks of AI in the work of journalists, DKnews.kz reports

The Forum brought together journalists, factcheckers, researchers and various media representatives, creating an engaging platform for meaningful discussion, exchange of experience, learning and networking.

Opening the Forum the European Union Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Aleska Simkic noted:

The EU is committed to raise awareness about information manipulation and disinformation, to fight it and to build resilience against it, both in the EU and globally - together with partners. Emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence can serve as either a weapon or a shield in the fight against disinformation—what matters is how we use and understand them. Together, through awareness, knowledge-sharing, and commitment, we can build resilience against the growing challenges of information manipulation and safeguard the integrity of journalism”

The Chairman of the Board of Maqsut Narikbayev University, Talgat Narikbayev, emphasized that preparing professionals capable of addressing future challenges is the University's top priority. He noted that the forum's themes highlight the importance of journalistic ethics as a foundation for building a healthy and transparent society.

We are convinced that advancing journalistic practices and countering misinformation are critical steps toward fostering public trust and protecting democratic values” Talgat Narikbayev

During the Forum, an exhibition “The Future of Media Though the Lens of AI” was opened.  It was dedicated to showcase the interaction between the AI and author’s creativity. The exhibition explored  whether different languages,  AI tools, and individual interpretation influence the final picture. This thought-provoking display underscores the complexity of AI. The AI-generated images were created by MNU students and EU Member States representatives.

Participants had the opportunity to attend two engaging workshops: "How to Deal with Contemporary Information Manipulation?" and "Should a Journalist Harness Artificial Intelligence?". These sessions were conducted by experienced European trainers, providing attendees with practical tools and actionable insights to enhance their professional skills and navigate the evolving media landscape effectively.

The Media Forum 2024 served as a platform for fostering dialogue, sharing knowledge, and strengthening the media community's ability to navigate the complexities of AI and information manipulation. As new technologies, continue to shape the media landscape, the EU remains committed to supporting journalists and media professionals in adapting to these changes. Successful discussions, workshops, and exhibition during the event reflect the shared commitment to safeguarding the integrity of information space and promoting informed, responsible media practices in the digital age. The European Union looks forward to continuing its collaboration with partners in Kazakhstan and beyond to build a resilient, informed media community for the future.
