The Alaska summit marked a breakthrough in strengthening Russia’s international standing and advancing mutual understanding on the global stage. This was stated by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during a phone conversation with Vladimir Putin. According to the Head of State, the talks helped the American side gain a better understanding of Russia’s position on Ukraine, which may contribute to finding common ground on this complex issue. In turn, the Russian leader briefed his counterpart on specific aspects of his discussions with Donald Trump.
Political analyst Murad Shamilov shared his views with DKNews.kz on the significance of the meeting and Kazakhstan’s role in conflict resolution.
— In your opinion, how should President Tokayev’s statement about the importance of Russian-American dialogue be interpreted?
— President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s statement on the importance of Russian-American dialogue is not just a matter of diplomatic courtesy. It is a well-thought-out and pragmatic stance that also reflects Kazakhstan’s aspiration to contribute to de-escalating conflict-prone situations and to seeking sustainable compromises.
At a time when bilateral diplomatic channels between Russia and the West have been significantly narrowed, any attempt to restore communication takes on strategic significance.
Kazakhstan’s support for this format demonstrates its commitment to stabilizing the situation in Eurasia. It also reflects Astana’s multi-vector foreign policy strategy, where the priority is not aligning with particular blocs but supporting mechanisms of peaceful settlement and international security. At the same time, it strengthens Kazakhstan’s status as a middle power making a meaningful contribution to these processes at the present stage.
— In your view, how does the international community perceive Kazakhstan’s efforts toward peaceful conflict resolution, and how does this affect its diplomatic standing amid growing polarization in world politics?
— By describing the Anchorage summit as a breakthrough, the Head of State highlighted not only the importance of reestablishing direct contacts between the United States and Russia, but also set the framework in which Kazakhstan positions itself as a country committed to supporting international stability.

Such statements reinforce Kazakhstan’s diplomatic weight. In the international arena, they are perceived as a sign of a mature foreign policy - one that not only monitors key geopolitical processes but also develops an independent position toward them.
This is especially important against the backdrop of growing polarization in global politics, as countries capable of taking balanced and independent stances are increasingly in demand as mediators and platforms for dialogue.
— How would you assess the level of trust between Kazakhstan and Russia, especially in the context of the current international political situation?
— The exchange of information of this nature demonstrates the high level of trust between the leaders of Kazakhstan and Russia. Moreover, it underscores Moscow’s informal recognition of Kazakhstan’s diplomatic significance in the context of current international processes.

Sharing details of a closed dialogue with the United States is not simply an act of courtesy on Putin’s part, but a manifestation of the strategic interaction between the two leaders and their countries. It may also indicate that Russia views Kazakhstan as a reliable partner in creating additional channels of communication, including with Western capitals - particularly in today’s geopolitical environment.
In an era of fragmented diplomacy, the role of countries like Kazakhstan can increase substantially. Kazakhstan has consistently advocated for the peaceful resolution of international crises, and in the case of the Ukrainian conflict this is expressed in the principle of “peace at any cost.”
As President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized in a recent conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, for Ukraine the most important outcome of a settlement should be, first and foremost, the preservation of statehood. At the same time, it is crucial to understand that this is not about compromise at any price, but about creating conditions for dialogue as the only viable mechanism.
Kazakhstan’s position shapes the perception of the country as a reliable, pragmatic, and at the same time sovereign participant in international processes. This is particularly significant at a time when the global security architecture is undergoing transformation, and the need for independent yet constructive actors is growing.
