The National Bank of Kazakhstan has issued a warning to citizens about new methods used by fraudsters to gain access to personal data and bank accounts. In recent months, there has been a rise in incidents involving innovative and psychologically sophisticated fraud schemes, DKnews.kz reports.

Fraud Schemes: How Do Scammers Operate?

  1. "Flower Deception"
Scammers send bouquets of flowers without identifying the sender. After delivery, they contact the recipient, posing as representatives of a courier service, and request a confirmation code from the SMS message, thereby gaining access to personal information.
  2. Postal Parcel Fraud
Citizens receive SMS messages or malicious links claiming to help retrieve parcels from postal offices. To do so, they are asked to enter their personal data. As a result, fraudsters can access the victim's phone, including banking applications.
  3. Distribution of Malicious Files
Fraudsters distribute malicious software disguised as photo files (with the extension “.APK”) in messaging apps. Upon opening these files, an installation process begins, giving fraudsters control over the device and even the ability to lock it.
  4. Artificial Intelligence-Based Fraud
Fraudsters use artificial intelligence technologies to mimic the voice or video of close relatives or friends. They contact victims, posing as family members or acquaintances, and request money transfers, ask them to follow links, download applications, or provide personal information under various pretexts.

Recommendations from the National Bank

Given the increasing number of fraud cases involving mobile devices, the National Bank of Kazakhstan advises citizens to follow these safety precautions:

  • Do not share confidential information with third parties.
  • Do not trust suspicious phone calls and verify the authenticity of any requests.
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links and opening unknown files.
  • Do not install remote access applications such as HopToDesk, RustDesk, RUDesktop, AnyDesk, TeamViewer, and others.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be an employee of a government agency or the National Bank, it is recommended to end the call and independently contact the organization via its official phone number.

What to Do If You Encounter Fraud?

If you fall victim to fraud, it is crucial to immediately contact the law enforcement authorities of the Republic of Kazakhstan and file a report.

For additional information and consultations, citizens can contact the National Bank’s Contact Center at the short number 1477.

The National Bank reminds everyone that vigilance and caution are your main tools in protecting your personal data and finances.
