On 17 and 18 October, the premiere of the two-act ballet “Two Carpets”, a large-scale work woven from the finest threads of feelings, music and dance, took place triumphantly on the stage of the Astana Ballet Theatre, DKNews.kz reports.
The production, which draws inspiration from the ancient Azerbaijani legend of the Shirvan carpet, invites viewers to imagine a world where the ornament becomes a chronicle of life, with each thread intricately weaving fate and memory. At the heart of the story is a love that began in youth, endured wars, losses and separation, and was rekindled by the light of reunion.
The character Leila, as a creator of her destiny, masterfully weaves joy and pain, hope and love into the carpet. Her art functions as a reflection of the human soul’s capacity to surmount adversity and maintain fidelity.
Valery Kopeikin is the author of the libretto and the ideological inspirer of the project. He embodied philosophical depth and national motives in the plot. Director and choreographer Alexander Mogilev has transformed an ancient legend into a modern stage production, combining classic and innovative elements of drama and movement in harmony. Performed live by the Theatre’s Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Arman Urazgaliyev, the music of composer Arseni Smirnov gave the production power, emotional intensity and orchestral grandeur.
The artistic conception of the performance was devised by artist Anastasia Kapustina, the costumes were designed by the renowned designer Igor Chapurin, and the digital graphics and visual effects were embodied by Alexandra Artamonova. The lights, the decorations, and the movements of the performers all work together to create a stage world that is both cohesive and poetic.
The theatre’s artistic director, Nurlan Kanetov, noted:
“The special value of this project lies in the fact that it is the result of two strong creative teams coming together: the international MOSAIC DEL ARTE company and the Astana Ballet Theatre. Today’s premiere marks a new step in our shared journey, reflecting trust, mutual understanding, and a love of art.”
“Two Carpets” is not just a ballet performance; it is also a philosophical parable about memory, love, and the resilience of the human heart. It brings together the East and the West, tradition and modernity, and transforms the stage into a space where music, movement and light breathe life into art.
This premiere is an expression of love for beauty, culture, and humanity. This premiere will undoubtedly be remembered by the audience as one of the most reverent and profound projects of the Astana Ballet Theatre.
