The Astana Ballet Theatre invites residents and guests of the capital to immerse themselves in a world of enchantment and joy, DKNews.kz reports.
As the New Year approaches, the theatre is presenting a series of winter fairy-tale productions. Each one is filled with vivid emotions, graceful choreography, and authentic theatrical magic.
The legendary ballet “The Nutcracker”, edited by Vasily Vainonen and staged by People’s Artist of Russia Altynai Asylmuratova, traditionally becomes the central decoration of the New Year’s repertoire. The ballet features performers from the Astana Ballet Theatre and students from the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography.
This production is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding examples of the St. Petersburg classical school, and it has become one of the most eagerly awaited events in the cultural life of the capital since its debut. For the past eight years, “The Nutcracker” has consistently attracted full houses to the theatre stage, with 10-15 performances presented to audiences every year.

The ballet captivates audiences with its festive atmosphere, large-scale scenes, colourful costumes and magical music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, evoking a sense of wonder. The story of Masha and the Nutcracker has long been considered to symbolise the New Year’s season. Attending this play is a tradition that many families observe.
The theatre has prepared a special abridged version of the ballet for young audiences, which will be performed on 19, 20, 21 and 23 December. This light, dynamic and fascinating performance was designed to allow children to explore the world of classical art in an interesting and comfortable way. The production retains all the key storylines, vivid dance scenes and the main musical themes of Tchaikovsky, making it the perfect introduction to ballet for a child.

The winter programme will continue with the fabulous ballet, The Snow Queen, which will be presented on 7, 9 and 10 January. This touching and atmospheric production by Heorhii Kovtun, the choreographer and author of the libretto, is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale. It tells the story of the power of friendship, kindness and dedication, which can melt even the coldest heart. The performance is equally beloved by both adults and children thanks to its expressive choreography, large-scale decorations, spectacular visual solutions and rich emotional palette.
The classic fairy tale Cinderella, showing on 23rd and 24th January, will complete the winter programme. Choreographed and written by Nadezhda Kalinina, the ballet set to the music of Sergei Prokofiev tells the story of self-belief, strength of character, and the miracle that can change fate. The magic of the world-famous plot is conveyed through sophistication, romance and vivid stage images, and sounds especially warm and inspiring when performed by the artists of the Astana Ballet.
A ll performances are accompanied by the Astana Ballet Theatre Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Chief Conductor Arman Urazgaliyev and Conductor Elmar Buribayev.

The Astana Ballet Theatre’s winter productions offer a wonderful opportunity to experience the festive season in an atmosphere of art, inspiration and wonder. These performances unite generations, giving warmth, joy and unforgettable impressions that stay in the memory for a long time. The Astana Ballet Theatre is looking forward to sharing the magic of a winter fairy tale with its audience and celebrating the New Year together in a world of beauty and harmony.
